Help Will the unlocked HTC Desire HD work in India?

Isn't it a hardware featue primarily (the hardware device that broadcasts the connection via radio waves to wireless enabled devices), IMO ? And needless to say, for the hardware to operate you need particular drivers/software (whichever software Android2.1/2.2 or Humpty-Dumpty 0.8 allows it do so)

You can do it with older Androids as well, but you need a rooted phone and some app or a Google provided application like this;

android-wifi-tether - Project Hosting on Google Code

With 2.2, Google have provided out of the box support for wi-fi tethering making it much easier to use taking the complications out of it

seems like only in delhi they selling it for 26.3-26.5 where as everywhere its 27 around

I am not surprised by that. Taxes are less in the capital. We will hav to shed few bucks extra due to taxes:mad: . I think anywhere between 26.5 - 27k is good buy. I am planning to bargain for atleast a screen guard or case with the purchase as freebie.

I have to sell my SGS then will buy DHD

I bought the DHD on 24 December from New Jagat Associates, Maratha Halli, Bangalore @ 27500, got it 9 pm

This shop is only ~400 meters away from my home (My lazy bum should get the DHD asap). Thanks a tonne dude :). Hope they have good pouch and screen protectors too. Did you get one for yourself ? :)

And can someone explain me the whole map & navigation business ? :( As far as I understand, DHD (or any other phone for that matter) has got GPS which means GPS knows our longitude and lattitude based on free signals from satelites. But to show the location on a map, the phone should have maps loaded on the phone (either online through internet or offline installed). So, if DHD has not got internet or pre-installed maps, I think GPS would be almost useless in that situation. Am I correct here ? If not, a detailed reply with explanation of basics will help.

btw, the Indian DHD has maps pre-loaded or you have to install that 200MB package which I have been hearing on this forum ? And which cities are covered in that 200MB pack ?

And navigation is all about when software tells us the directions by voice. Isn't it ?

AFAIK there are two GPS types one is regular GPS which looks to satellites and does not really need anything other than the GPS receiver hardware, the second is A-GPS which is called as assisted GPS. This uses the cell towers to triangulate your location.

How does GPS in a mobile phone work exactly? - Stack Overflow

The need for pre-loaded maps comes from the HTC and TomTom (one of the famous GPS receiver makers along with Garmin etc) partnership. Check this link out;

TomTom maps get loaded onto HTC Locations, promise 'zero-wait navigation experience' -- Engadget

Turn-by-turn (TBT) navigation is a feature of some GPS navigation devices where directions for a selected route are continually presented to the user in the form of spoken or visual instructions. The system keeps the user up-to-date about the best route to the destination, and is often updated according to changing factors such as traffic and road conditions. Turn-by-turn systems typically use an electronic voice to inform the user whether to turn left or right, the street name, and how much distance to the turn. (This is from wikipedia ... :D)

For TBT on a DHD, you can use Google maps for which TBT is free but needs an internet connection for GPS, whereas HTC-TomTom offers GPS without internet but you need to purchase TBT.

pouch and screen protectors --when i bought this phone they dont have any pouch or case(it was just arrived at there shop at 8.30 pm, i was waiting there since 7 pm), they have screen protectors but i didnt buy this time. If you visit this shop please let me know about puch/case.

GPS navigation --DHD have pre installed Google map for India (around 200 mb), but Google navigation is not available in India, DHD also have option of premium navigation (works offline, no need of active internet connection). I had used this premium navigation feature it it works wonderfully (used GPS navigation first time so i was very happy). There seems to be some restriction on using the premium navigation feature (basically it is on trial for one month and after that you have to buy this- Rs 370 for one month and around 1300 for a year. you will need active internet connection to activate trial).
GPS doesn't catch signal if you are indoor, but once you are on the road signals are there.
Let me know if you need more info

Hmmm.....A stand that covers the main rear speaker....soo....I can't listen to audio very well or play anything while holding the phone in my hand instead of placing it on a table to hear from the speakers??? ..
hmmm...seems like a flawed design already!

I've been a slient (and very patient) member on here.... and the wait is seriously killing me. I've just been stalking all the Desire HD info all over the net - seeing info on the XDA forums, different apps for it, updates, latest YouTube videos uploaded, reviews and I seriously want to get this phone asap.....

Does anyone know if this is available anywhere in Chennai? Am desperately looking for it but having waited so so long, I really don't want to go in for a grey market one or ship it from overseas ....but at the unclear rate at which things are going, I don't know :D

I tried asking Univercell and they had no clue and another guy in a smaller mobile shop told me 3 weeks ago he could get it in grey market for 30K.

If anyone has any contacts as to where this is available in Chennai officially please do pass it on.

And a general thanks to all the people on this thread for contributing so much and giving such detailed informative responses. Very Much appreciated!!

Cheers,
AndroidFreud.

It does have one more speaker strip at the top, but I think thats not really going to help in noisy areas, their kickstand as a strip around the camera is a good idea as it kind of gives protection to the camera also.

Thanks Saj_2001ind for the quick reply. I remember flipkart being mentioned in this forum earlier but I can't recall if anyone had actually purchased from them. I've usually had rough experiences buying online in India in the past. Hope this is better and reliable. Anyone on here have experience purchasing from them? Is the timeframe, customer service etc up to the mark?

And are all of you who are getting this locally - is it only available in dark brown? No black model?

Cheers,
AndroidFreud.

I ordered it from Flipcart on Friday evening (could not resist the temptation!). Cash on delivery. In general, they promise delivery in about 3 working days; in my case, they promised to deliver it on the 28th, due to Christmas followed by Sunday....... and yesterday afternoon, I had the Desire HD in my hands! Haven't had time for anything else since then :)

The courier guy was curious to know what the package contained; he was used to delivering books for Flipcart, and was wondering how a book could cost 27.5 k.

I think it comes only in Mocha Brown at present. Not 100% sure though.

Cheers,
SMartKid

P.S. - you can also track your shipment. I spent much of yesterday morning and early afternoon tracking my shipment online from Bangalore to the Bombay main office to my local courier office.

No experience with flipkart personally, but I think someone on this forum have got it from Flipkart. Also, have heard good about them. Best part is 'Cash on delivery'.

Or wait for couple of days, check out by calling big mobile shops of Chennai or go through the official HTC dealers in Chennai mentioned on HTC India website. Or ask any of your friends in Bangalore/Coaimbatore to get it to you. Best is to get it locally.

Most of people here are getting locally except the first ones who got it from Expansys online store, UK.

DHD is available in only one color, which officially is called 'Dark Brown'. Some people call it 'Black'.

even though i dnt really like d fone.. jus a little smthn for ppl who haven't got a DHD yet..

Nexus S listed at Infibeam at Rs. 24,000 for India

That link says it has 720p HD video recording but I remember reading that it doesn't in some other places (only WVGA recording @ 30fps) and also here. Could this be an update? Usually GSMArena is pretty spot on from my experience with it in the past.
