Help Camera function

DroidRick

Android Enthusiast
It seems there is a new camera function that came with Froyo 2.2.

When I start my camera there is a flashing airplane/bird-like icon with arcs moving away from it like the GPS signal icon. The icon is in the top left corner of the camera screen, next to screen resolution, flower (close-up) etc. icons.

What is this icon for? What function is tied to it?

One reason I'm asking is because my camera is acting up.
It's getting stuck in many places (taking pics, viewing pics etc.).

TIA

In addition to the above, I am having "camera issues".
I have Froyo 2.2, XWJPA build.

I can't delete pics in either the camera app or the gallery app.
It tries to delete in camera, but eventually I get a 'force close' notice.
In gallery I simply get a spinning wheel next to a delete message and it stays like this indefinitely.
I must go to Task manager to end Gallery at this stage! :(

It doesn't just look like a gps icon. It is the gps icon. :D Samsung removed the optional geo tagging and made it compulsory instead.

Are you serious?
We must geo tag all our photos?
That just doesn't make sense.
What is the rationale behind compulsory tagging?
Maybe fingerprinting will be next?

When I turn on GPS on my phone, it doesn't work now.
And when it does (not too often) I get a location more than 30 miles from me!

I guess they did it for convenience. If you don't want to geotag your photo's I am assuming just turning gps off in the drop down will prevent it from working right?

First off, if anyone who is reading this learns of a firmware upgrade that doesn't have this cool camera feature, please let me know!

Convenience for who? Certainly not for me.
No, the GPS isn't even on when that icon is flashing in camera.

I just looked at some pics taken when the icon was flashing.
Looked at them in file manager, Astro etc.. I didn't see any mention of location.

Next I 'turned on' my GPS and then opened Camera and took some pics.
The icon was still flashing when I took the pics.
I looked at the pics and there was no location information.

Now when I say 'turned on', I mean I dropped down the notification bar and tapped on the GPS icon. It turned green.

But it rarely works (not that I care). I mean I can open a map app or something else that looks for a GPS signal and the icon will search for a location for 5 - 10 minutes and never lock into anything.

So what's bugging me is not that it doesn't work in camera,
it's that it turns on automatically without my approval.
If there was a setting, I would never turn it on.

Just to add to the confusion.
I just turned on GPS (not that this has anything to do with what happened after)
and took a few pics.
The date/time on my computer/phone was Jan 3, 2011 11:53 pm.
The pics turned out to have a date of Jan 4, 2011 3:53 am !!!
Now isn't that reassuring?

The GPS takes forever to get a lock on in camera mode. It takes about a minute or two in Google map, but more than 5 minutes in camera mode. Ridiculous. I tried to take a geo tagged photo on top of the alps. Almost lost my fingers to frostbite.

even if you off the GPS, but you enable 'use wireless networks' under location and security, the camera will still geo tag your photos (using wifi/3G). You have to turn off everything if you don't want to geo tagging to start.

Thanks Lobo!

Just to clarify what Lobo said.
The settings are somewhat confusing now.

To adjust Wifi/GPS settings, don't go into Settings/Wireless and Network.
Go into Location and Security!
Uncheck "Use wireless networks" and uncheck "Use GPS satellites"

Then you won't get the geo-tagging business in Camera.
