Help X10 not being detected by computer?

My brother and I both ordered Sony Ericsson Xperia X10a's in 2010. They were the Canadian versions registered to Rogers network. I was excited to own SE's first android phone. It worked fine and everything until one day about two months ago. I used to tether my 3G onto my laptop to get an internet connection. One day randomly the computer just stopped recognizing the X10. I would always get the error "USB not recognized". I figured that it was a faulty USB cable. However, my brother's phone was recognized by my cable. Then i thought maybe it was my computer. But when i connected my X10 to my brother's computer, i got the same error. So i knew it was a phone error. The phone would still charge with the AC outlet but not through the USB even though the LED light that says it's charging would stay on. I tried researching on forums on what could be the possible cause. I tried both the suggested soft reset and hard reset. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling SE Companion as well. I still received the same error. Luckily, i did have a SquareTrade warranty and I sent it to them. After a week, they say they could not fix the phone and are refunding me the cost of the phone. I am curious to see if there are any others out there that might have had a similar problem with connecting their X10 to their computer? Also, just last week my brother's X10 just stopped charging completely. He can't charge it through AC outlet or USB. He's about to send it in for repair and I'm quite sure it's gonna be a problem they won't be able to fix either. Any one else have similar problems with their X10?

The 'stopped charging' problem is very common, and has been discussed in the following link

About the drivers....

You could try this, it has worked for me in the past, but from what you have said, there's a chance this may not work, wont hurt to try it tho...

First of all, switch on your X10 and connect it via USB to your computer!

Now follow the instructions below for the OS you have...

FOR WINDOWS XP

  1. Click on Start and then Control Panel.
  2. Click on the Performance and Maintenance link.
Note: If you're viewing the Classic View of Control Panel, you won't see this link. Simple double-click on the System icon and proceed to Step 4.
  3. In the Performance and Maintenance window, click on the System icon near the bottom of the window.
  4. In the System Properties window, click on the Hardware tab.
  5. With the Hardware tab selected, click on the Device Manager button.
FOR WINDOWS VISTA & WINDOWS 7

  1. Click Start
  2. Type device manager then press enter

When you have device manager up, look for an icon like this
bang.gif

If you see one right click on it and uninstall. When it is removed, disconnect the X10, wait 10 seconds and re-connect.

If you do not see the icon, look for SEMC Mass Storage USB Device under disk drives.

If SEMC Mass Storage USB Deviceisn't there, and there was no yellow icon, then the phone is faulty, or you could wriggle the mini usb end about to see if it connects

Sorry if I was no help, but that's the best I can do to help

I did have that problem on the laptop but then I thought it could be not working because it may have updated something on the laptop through phone and sometimes the computer needs restarting so I restarted the computer and it worked, it started charging and able to get in my phone again.
