Sprint plan to add $10 'Premium Data' smartphone

For all NEW activations. Anyone who bought the phone thus far, such as myself, are just fine for 2 years. I'm really not worried, but I'm pissed at Sprint for even having a 10 dollar fee. I'm honestly considering Verizon or T-Mobile for after my contract is up, even though me and my family have been dedicated to them for almost 12 years. Psh. I'm sorry but this burns pretty bad as a loyal Sprint customer.
 
This sounds like the early stages of airlines charging fees for any checked luggage and then anything else that they can find to charge an additional fee. It will be interesting to see who will become the Southwest of the phone companies.
 
I would prefer they just raise the actual plan price up $10. So the $69 plan ends up $79 and so forth. Adding $10 to the data plan separately and calling it premium data just sounds like they are trying to nickel and dime you. I'm pretty sure they just want to have their $69 plan (heavily promoted tv ads) and charge the fee at the same time. Shame on you sprint.
 
I got the transform just to avoid the $10 4G fee. What's the difference now? Will I be on the 4G network? bet not
 
This goes into effect ONLY after the 31st of January. For those signed before that will not incur this new charge. We are all "grandfathered" in. This means when our contracts are up, we will still be paying the same rates even on new contracts.

And this is exactly what everyones doing, buying a new 3G smartphone now... but its shaking the foundation of Sprint customers at the same time. Even my own father is thinking about switching in 2 years, and we've been with Sprint for 12 years. Basically since the beginning.

Why would you want to change in 2 years unless you were adding more lines? When your rates are "grandfathered", it means the rates will stay the same even at the time of renewing when your contract is up i.e your dta plan's rate stays the same as it is today. Your father should not be worried.

I think what he is trying to say and what I think Sprint is saying, is that all those 3G phones bought after 1/30/11 will be charged $10 bucks more. So if you buy now, you will not have to pay $10 more per month but you will in 2 years from now.

By the way, I hope you guys are reading between the lines. In a near futre, once all 3G smart phones are charged an extra $10 per month, all 4G smart phones will now go up to $20 per month. So it will be:

3G smart phones: $10 extra per month
4G smart phones: $20 extra per month

Did you get this from Sprint? That goes against any "grandfather" clauses. I was with TMobile for 8 years and I paid $15 a month for unlimited data while my brother was paying higher than mine.

Yes. I got it through Sprint chat and I recommend you do the same in case it changes later, you will have a Sprint chat session ID that you can point to if things go south.

So I hightly recommend that you ask Sprint if this is true or not and save the chat session for future reference if you need it.

is that $20 more on top of the already $10 for 4g phones. so if i have the $69 plan i would be paying $89? if they decide to do this i might as well go with the other carriers. sprints $69 flat rate plans is the only reason i decided to stay with them. i been a customer for 8 years. sprint has got to realize they will lose more customers by doing this not gain.

We can all relax. I got confirmation from Sprint that if I do not change my current plan then there will be no rate changes or increases. Please read below:

No, not on top. Just $20 extra for 4G. I too have been a Sprint customer for many years.

The reason I say 4G smart phones will have an extra $20 fee (instead of $10 like now) in the near future, is from looking at what Sprint has been doing recently.

Sprint has been taking steps ( ~slowley~ ) to increase profits. They indroducted the $10 extra for 4G coverage, then they eliminated all stacked discounts, then they remove the employee discounts people were getting on the entire bill and now it's only applied to the plan.

Everyone screamed blood at first when extra $10 charge was first introduced. The carnage is finally settling down and as soon as everyone gives in and are confortable with $10 extra charge, BANG Sprint will introduce a NEW $10 for 4G making all 4G phones now $20 extra and all 3G phones $10 extra.

Everyone with a current contract will continue paying the same, but all new 4G activations will be $20 extra.

What I don't know is when this will take place. I say by mid summer :D
