I've been preaching that for awhile now. Pre3 and Veer. HtC WP7. Don't think they'll fair well on Sprint without 4g. 4g is everywhere now on every carrier. It'll be a commodity soon enough just like HD should be on cable and satellite. Why would I pay $10 more for yesterday's tech when I can get today's tech for the same price?

4g isn't even close to being in enough places to actually care if a phone has it or not for most people.

I disagree. With all the 4G commercials (not only Sprint, but Verizon and T-Mobile, plus soon to be AT&T), people care more and more every day.

Plus Sprint 4G is in a lot of places now. It's not like they only have 1 4G city or anything. Sprint has 4G coverage in "over 70 markets" with over 120 million people. So it's not exactly scarce.

I think not. Most people don't even know the difference between 4G and 3G, yet they'll still want 4G because it's "better"

That's because they are idiots and uninformed consumers.

It is to a ton of people who don't live in major cities. People who can't use it shouldn't care. If they do they are idiots.

When you're on 4G the difference in speed is HUGE. You can't help but notice the difference.

There is a huge difference. But if it isn't in your area then there is no use for a 4g phone.

Do you know how to disassemble your car, put it back together, and know what part does what? Should a mechanic think your an idiot because you don't know these things?

Again, I disagree. Even if you don't have 4G in your area that doesn't mean you will never have it, or never go to a 4G area. If you have to pay for it either way, you might as well get it.

Sprint has been pretty aggressive about rolling out 4G. How many markets have they rolled it out in the past 6 months? 50? 60?

Yes, I understand there will be people who aren't in a 4G area. But the majority of Sprint customers actually are in 4G areas now, and more 4G areas are launching all the time.

The speed limit is only 65 mph. That doesn't mean nobody would buy the Lamborghini if it was the same price as the Geo.

So show me one of those dual care 4" SAMOLED+ 3g phones with HDMI out, front facing camera and such. There's not one 3g phone that can compare to the specs of the 4g ones, and the Echo surely doesn't. Granted there aren't any dual core phones yet, but I highly doubt one will come out that is 3g only. And if I'm the customer, I want that premier phone for all the things it can do that aren't dependent upon 4g but put it that much ahead of it's 3g cousins.

Then again, will mfg's want to make wimax phones if there is talk of Sprint going LTE? Would they want to make a 4g phone that can work on multiple networks or one that will only work on one and isn't even their wave of the future?

There is a huge difference. Learning about what you are buying is just being a smart consumer. The better comparison would be if you were going to buy a car and knowing nothing about what you are buying yet buying it because some sales person said you needed it.

And yes I do know about my car. I can fix it myself. I grew up with my dad as a mechanic and I grew up learning all about cars. ;)

Maybe you need to get out more. Sprint has a s#@t ton of consumers in areas that are not 4g. And if the Lamborghini and Geo where the same price I would buy the one that worked best for me. Hint it would not be the Lamborghini. I do not have 4g. Nore does 99% of the areas in the 5 closest states (except Cali). There are more areas without it than with it. Besides why by 4g now if you won't have it for at least another 2+ years. Might as well get the phone that you want and not care about 4g. I wouldn't pick my phone based on something that I can't use.

But 4G is coming to your area soon! 4G will be in my Area November 2010. Awesome, I cant wait!

Looks on phone... Tap to scan. Nothing.

I am sure I will have it next week! Wait, what? It won't come to an area with only 7k people in it for a few more years?! Well wtf! But my phone says 4g I should be able to use it!

Lol its cool to see the convo shift from the echo to 3g/4g importance lol

Alot of my friends know i try to stay informed and up to date with phone technology as i usually have a new cell every other week and I've been asked the difference between 3g/4g
I always say it's "supposed to be faster" but honestly, 4g to me is not that fast and 4g is definitely not a feature i am looking for in a phone...if a phone has it, that's great...But if it doesn't...okay

I've owned a mytouch 4g on t-mobile and an Evo with Sprint and now unfortunately im using a G2 because i broke my hd7 and i dont feel like dropping 500 for another one

Anyway...4g is not that fast to me nor is 3g really that slow to me. I don't see the speed boost really...My wi-fi connection still is faster than 4g speeds.

In all actuality, I really don't think 4g matters to people THAT Much and in fact i don't think 4g is of importance to average modern day consumer.

Phones like the Xperia play or phones that tout Video chatting or geared towards consumers...and i think the latest lineup from At&t and Verizon are geared towards the "geeks" who actually care and throw a fit when a phone is released with lower specs(echo)

In fact, A lot of people now-adays just want the smartphone without the data. Look on these forums and on other forums. They want all the features of a smartphone sans data because data plans are expensive...I am one of those people.

Well I'm glad I changed the topic, but the point is a bit skewed. It's not about 4g per say,it's about the true premium phones with the fastest proccesors, best graphics, nicest screens, more memory, and better connectivity. What mfg is going to make that premium phone for 3g only at this stage of the game? Most likely, none of them. The Echo isn't premium. It's dual screen is hampered by it's internals, so why would I pay that $10 premium when the phone isn't up to snuff?

that's a good way of looking at it....unfortunately the uniformed(or idiots as Missjennell called them) will probably fall for the gimmick of the screens(especially if Sprint markets the hell out of this feature) and not be aware of this

Some of us would rather worry about making money or spending time with family than scrutinizing every single purchase we make. If you've ever bought food from a fast food restaurant, your just as guilty as the rest of us.

Now back to the echo...

I think it'll do ok as a gimmick phone for kids in school. If someone got a DS emulator running on it that'd be a pretty neat selling point.

The reviews said it was quite laggy, and you can't even watch a video and use another core app. At least that's what was said.

But wasn't that a pre production echo? I want to see Phone dog and mobiletech review and mobile burn come with their reviews when the device actually launches with it's finalized software and everything

Oh i thought the Echo was Kyocera's first smartphone and android smartphone
but i just found out that they made the Sanyo Zio?

Did not know that...Thanks to google and AF :)

Did you just tell me you'd take a Geo over a Lamborghini for the same price? In the same post where you say you know about cars and are predicting what consumers will buy? lol, wow. Look, add up all of Sprint's customers that don't ever travel to a 4G area. Now add up all of Sprint's customers that do travel to a 4G area at least every once in a while. Care to make a bet which number will be significantly higher? In case you haven't noticed, Sprint has over 120 million people covered with 4G now (almost half the population of the USA) in over 70 markets. It may not be in your area, but don't think for a second that everyone is in that same situation. And, again, just because there is no 4G there today, doesn't mean there won't be for the length of a 2 year contract. People do care about 4G. and the number of people who care about it grows every day.

that's a good way of looking at it....unfortunately the uniformed(or idiots as Missjennell called them) will probably fall for the gimmick of the screens(especially if Sprint markets the hell out of this feature) and not be aware of this
Those same people who fall for gimmicks will immediately notice that it doesn't have a front camera or 4G. Also, in your other post you said 4G is not a big deal... If that were true, you wouldn't see AT&T advertising about the simultaneous voice and data on their iPhone (Sprint 4G does simultaneous voice and data). People absolutely care about that. Especially if they are doing something that requires fast 4G data (tethering, etc). So in addition to the video chat, higher quality videos, faster data speeds, and so on, it also does simultaneous voice and data. May not be important to you, but it certainly is to a lot of people- especially people that would get sucked in by a gimmick.

Now that Sprint's 3G smartphones and 4G smartphones incur the same $10/month adder (since 1/30/11), I think most people who are in the market for a Sprint smartphone will be willing to spend a little extra up-front in order to get a more feature-rich, future-proof 4G phone, regardless of whether 4G service is available in their area. The 4G phones available for Sprint are just a better bang for the buck.
