Okay I reviewed the list of droid market apps that were banned and removed 4 being malicious. Unfortunately I have loaded 2 of the apps on that list. guitar solo lite and music box. I uninstalled guitar solo lite' and then loaded lookout. Lookout stated that there were no problems on my droid x. no infections etcetera.... my question is this how do I know if my phone is actually infected or not does lookout actually work??? I'm new to the smartphone.... what should I do to ensure that my phone is not infected what is my best course of action???.....

From what I heard a number of the malicious apps were similar named to legit non-malicious apps. If you are concerned about Lookout maybe missing something on your phone download the AVG Free app which can scan your phone for viruses. I know AVG works as it found something on my phone before and cleaned it up.

From what I've read about it no current anti-virus app intercepts these malicious codes. You'll have to reset factory settings and reinstall everything afresh from AppBrain and the Market. Not from a backup, because your backups also contain the malicious code. So you can trash your backups too...

So does any tech here know forsure??... no way of knowing if its compromised or not?...what all would be involved. In reset and backup deletion?..

They werent just named similarly, they were stolen versions of legit apps with the malicious code added on. Most had the name "super" added to the front. So "Guitar Solo" was stolen and renamed "Super Guitar Solo"

If the apps you had are still on the market, you're fine they are the legit versions of the real apps.

I feel bad for the devs of those apps. This virus writer caused a huge amount of confusion and horrible damage to the reputation of the people who developed the legit apps.

If you had 2 of those apps on your phone that's all the proof you need. You can bet your mother that phone is infected. A.k.a. screwed!
If you're uncomfortable resetting to factory settings go to a smartphone shop and have them do it for you.

From page 346 of the Android 2.2.1 UsersGuide (download here):

Factory data reset Erases all of your personal data from internal phone storage, including information about your Google Account, any other accounts, your system and application settings, and any downloaded applications. Resetting the phone does not erase any system software updates you’ve downloaded or any files on your SD card, such as music or photos. If you reset the phone in this way, the next time you turn on your phone you’re prompted to reenter the same kind of information as when you first started Android. See “Starting Android for the first time” on page 16.

There's no way you can tell with absolute certainty that your phone is/is not infected. The AV utitilies available may or may not work. You can try a couple of them and see if they detect anything. But the only way to gain a peace of mind is to do a factory reset and wipe everything.

I'm still not entirely convinced this guy had the virus versions of those apps.

A search for Guitar Solo lite, shows a legit app with over 250k downloads up on the market now.
