Google Maps Constantly Force Closing

Google Maps is constantly force closing on me (dozen times a day?) even though I never have it open. When I'm using Nav it does it maybe every couple minutes, though Nav doesn't close.

I took down the crash report and I'm hoping people can help:

Exception class name:

java.lang.NullPointerException

Source Class:

com.google.googlenav.android.appwidget.friends.FriendsAppWidgetUpdateService

Source Method:

onStart

Line number

-1

Anyone know what this friends widget thing is and how I can stop this? I thought about uninstalling (I'm rooted) and reinstalling but it said that might mess up my ROM.

I thought about uninstalling (I'm rooted) and reinstalling but it said that might mess up my ROM.

I found that the Google apps (Talk, Maps, Nav, etc.) are specifically locked from uninstalling from unrooted 2.2.1 running phones. They're hooked into the OS somehow. I can well imagine that uninstalling them from your rooted phone will therefore "mess up" your new ROM, into which they are probably also 'hooked'.

Here is a quote from my msg on this issue in the Sprint Hero forum.

"The fix is detailed in another thread here, search if you want all the gory details
The fix is dial ##GPSCLRX# when asked for the password enter you MSL. The phone will reboot and problem will be fixed. This will NOT wipe your phone."

Complete thread is at

Hope this helps.

I've been having intermittent problems with Google Maps navigation causing my Desire Z to reboot. It doesn't happen all the time, but does occasionally.

There was a new version of Google Maps that just came out yesterday. I installed it and so far on two trips, it hasn't cause a reboot yet. I'm going to try it the rest of the week to see if it is stable now.
