I use Lookout which has a feature that makes your phone scream when it's missing. It's also antivirus and has a backup feature as well. It's free unless you want the paid version. The only difference there is remote wipe and a privacy utility that anylizes apps. I've been using it for months and have been pretty pleased with it.

I tested FindMyPhone yesterday. The way it works is that you set it up with a special pin number or keyword. When your phone is lost or stolen, you use another phone and text the special pin number/keyword to your phone. Your phone will reply back with GPS info and a link to a map so you can find your phone.
It works with both GPS and 3G. GPS is accurate, but testing it with 3G got me pretty close.
Using GoLauncherEx, I can hide the app icon from appearing in my app drawer. So, an unsuspecting thief may not know that it's actually on there. Someone that actually knows a thing about these phones probably will figure it out though.

Smart aleck? You are mistaken.
If your phone is stolen, the first thing the thief'll do, is pull the battery and reset it.
So unless you lock it before he pulls the battery, your app is wasted.
So switch on the free 'Don't touch my Droid' app, and it will start screaming as soon as it is moved. 9 out of 10 thieves will drop it on the spot.

You're making the assumption that the average petty thief is smart enough to do that. Some will be. It never hurts to have a plan in case the thief isn't quite that clever.

Dopes don't waste time trying to separate you from your phone. Someone that wants your phone, because it is the latest and greatest also knows how to defeat simplistic steps such as ours.
If you lose it, the remote and wipe becomes useful, because the average Joe doesn't know how to unlock a phone.
But it does not stop a thief.

Sorry for coming off sort of rude there, was early in the morning and I was tired. But that post was more over directed toward other posters trying to be smart alec's, just saw yours last and read too much into it.
But really.. getting apps like these just isn't about if someone steals my phone. There's all kind of scenarios if from misplacing your phone somewhere in your house or by accidentally leaving it any place else. And having it ring and go off so I can find it easily is going to be very useful if I do end up misplacing it. Don't see why you're assuming the only way to lose my phone is for someone to steal it.
