New to Android, looking for some basic recommendations

Well, I won't actually be able to get my new phone until April 4th, but I like planning ahead with this stuff. I'll be getting the Thunderbolt, if that matters any. I plan to mostly stick to doing basic stuff -- web browsing, e-mail, Facebook, occasionally watching YouTube videos, using it for music/ video playback, etc.

So, are there any apps that do any of those things better than the default apps that'll already be on the phone? Better web browser, or anything like that?

Also, I'd kind of like to grab one of those apps that allows for free text messaging (as it'd be nice to not have to pay for texting, on top of my phone bill), not sure if there's any recommendations there. On my iPod Touch, I use FreeText, and I see that's available on the Android market as well. It's... alright, but it seems kind of limited, to me, and I find that it doesn't notify me when I get new texts. Not sure if the Android version is any different. Any other good ones?

Lastly, are there any good apps that allow you to stream TV shows to the device to watch, for free? Basically, something like Hulu, except without having to pay a monthly fee (although, I don't think Hulu's app is available on the Android market, anyway)? I'm into a lot of shows that I often miss when they air, and I have to catch up on them later; it'd be kinda neat to be able to do that on the go, such as when I'm on break at work, or something.

Also, just a question out of my own curiosity... Is the Android market a bit more... lenient with apps, or something? What I mean is, I noticed there are game emulators on there (SNES, GBA, even N64), and while I don't personally plan to grab any of those, I'm curious how they get away with being sold on the Android market. I'm imagine they'd never get to stay up on the Apple store, since game emulation isn't exactly legal.

Depends on your phone's capabilities, and your use of it. Yes, there are thousands of alternative apps. Read this forum carefully to get some idea which might suit you.

Streaming video/TV, watching live sports games, and gaming, on your phone, eat gigabytes of data. Not a problem if you do it over WiFi, but a BIG problem if you do it over mobile 2G, 3G, CDMA, etc. (phone) connections! You will very quickly exceed your carrier's "fair use policy", and things could get very expensive from then on!

Yes, as long as it lasts.

Eh, well, I looking more for something that works kind of like MegaVideo, where it's not necessarily a "stream", but more like a 22 minute YouTube video. Plus, I wouldn't be doing it often; just occasionally.

If you plan on using it as a music player, I recommend Winamp, also Doubletwist and Mixzing are good too. Pandora is a great app.

Plug In Launcher is an amazing app. You can program specific apps to automatically launch when you plug in headphones/usb/power cord. Great for putting in headphones and Winamp is already up! :)

What about free texting apps? As in, apps that allow you to send text messages for free, without having to pay for the service from your carrier. Like I said, I've used TextFree on my iPod Touch, and it's decent, but not great... Any other ones worth looking at?
