Tiny wings equivelant?

Is today a good day? ;) :D

Still up in the air - no pun intended. ;D

Most of our team has a background in professional flash game development, but this is our first mobile release, so it's really important that we gets things as right as we possibly can. We honestly weren't expecting so much attention so early, but now that we have it, we want to make sure we're not rushing anything!

We're definitely getting very close (I'm hoping to have some updated screenshots/videos this evening), but we might end up taking one or two more days to tweak the gameplay and, if time allows, add a few last minute features we've been discussing. There are a lot of things we were previously planning on saving for an expansion/update, but if we can get them into the initial release, I think we might be better off in the long run.

Our artist has been going through all the art and touching up almost every single asset in the game, in terms of both quality and style. There's still a lot of work left to finish, but the game is already starting to look a heck of a lot better. Likewise, we just went over a third pass on audio, and are starting to integrate all of those assets.

We're working hard on the coding end, too: we've been tweaking the physics and gameplay features a lot based on playtesting feedback (and I promise, we'll open up to a few more testers soon), and working on tying up loose ends (mostly interface stuff, audio, and metagaming features). I think we're really starting to hone on in an engine that, while similar to games like Tiny Wings / Wavespark / Sin Rider, can absolutely stand on its own merits. Playtesting feedback so far has been surprisingly positive, and I'm really looking forward to letting more people try it out!

Fex, can u please get the game on the market quickly cause I really want to play it cause I've played tiny wings and am addicted!!!! Hurry hurry

I also prefer to wait for the game to be polished and decently tested instead of being rushed into the Market :)

I even expected it would take longer than just 2 days if you're still adding features and tweaking the physics and gameplay... Take your time :) Everybody is going to compare your game to Tiny Wings, which is VERY well made, so it's important that you get it as close to "right" as possible on the first release...

I completely agree: I would rather take our time and get things perfect than rush to market. However, just based on what's finished right now, I think people are going to be really, really surprised at how well our game competes with Tiny Wings. It's amazing what we've been able to get done in the past few days after all this attention lit a fire under our tails. ;D

Hey fex!
i was just wondering if you had already planned the release date? i dont want to rush you but, my little brother keeps nagging me about it XD

Have you thought about allowing some of the members here to be testers? :) I bet all, if not a good number will agree to it.

I've never played Tiny wings. Not a big gamer myself but it seems like this is a very popular game on the iPhone judging from the posts here. How addictive is it to Angry Bird? Since everyone seems to be addicted to it, is the style/play/addiction the same?

Hahah, yeah, I've actually had a LOT of members here PMing me about it, and I've got a big list of candidates I'm planning on contacting soon.

The gameplay is actually quite different from Angry Birds (and, for that matter, it actually feels pretty different from Tiny Wings, too). Angry Birds is more of a slow-paced physics puzzler, while Dillo Hills is more of a fast-paced physics platformer: almost sort of a racing game, really.

The goal is to build up momentum by rolling down hills, then use that speed to soar through the air, picking up powerups and avoiding obstacles. You have a limited amount of energy that depletes automatically over time, and if you hit the ground at a bad angle, you lose a big chunk of that energy, so there's a fine balance between building up a bunch of speed while still maintaining enough control that you don't wipe out. It's really quite thrilling, and the challenge of advancing deeper and deeper into new levels each time is quite addictive.

We're trying up a few loose ends before recording another sneak peek video, but I think we're going to move this discussion over to a new thread and make more of a formal announcement some time tomorrow. We've got a bunch of people practically banging down the door wondering when they'll be able to play, and it's really starting to get exciting. :D

I absolutely cannot make any promises, but the rough timeline is to spend tomorrow wrapping up interface and metagaming code, open the game up for more playtesters tomorrow night and all day Sunday, and hopefully release late Sunday night or early Monday morning. Again, this is not official and is all subject to change. :D

Sadly enough I have finally decided to subscribe to this thread. I've been watching it since the first post was made due to it seeming like the only home place to a "tiny birds clone" as its being said now all over the web. I even read every post from the argument of what games are better ipod vs android (boy was that off topic. Although there were some sweet games he pointed out that I wish I remember the name of), but anyways I have an ipod touch and an android phone (moto droid 1) how well will Dillo Hills be able to run on the older Gen android phones? Ive watched the youtube video like 100x it feels like and went though all pics of Dillo hills on imageshack. Great artwork and its good to see the game coming along. I can't wait till the game is here. Its too bad that it wasnt here today (friday) but hey great games take time to complete. I have played Tiny Wings on a friends phone and having played it I can say its a most impressive game and I don't think yours will fall shy from it, seeing how far you have come in such a short amount of time. If you are looking for a tester, I'd be down to help out. I'm constantly on this page so hit me up :).

Can't wait for the video, is it ok to say im stalking youtube tonight? lol :P

Hahah, yeah, that's totally okay!

I'm really looking forward to the new video, too. I've been incredibly impressed by the revisions our artist has made since that early demo video, and I can't wait to show everyone else, too. :)

commentary under video:

  • Yeah right, you ripped off Tiny Wings. At least admit it like the Dillo Hils devs!

  • @VastedCouth We did not rip off Tiny Wings. If you look at our other videos you will see our gameplay footage posted from as early as April 2010 - Well before Tiny Wings had begun development. Go look.
Both Tiny Wings and Pilot Winds are based on Nathan McCoy's Wavespark, which is where the gameplay similarities arise.
It has taken us a year to make Pilot Winds. Tiny Wings came out two weeks ago. There is no way we could have achieved the quality and polish that Pilot Winds has in two weeks.

Posted this not to promote the game but to show that it took those people a year to make that game and doesnt really look that hard, "quick im gonna crash, *bounce* ok im good". seeing as what you guys have done in a lot less time and looks better I can't wait for the release.

Few questions: how will dillo hills fair on Droid 1? being made for more newer phones (droid x, droid 2, thunderbolt, etc)? will there be achievements/challenges? Like stay in the air for so long, hit so many slopes on island, collect all "stars" on certain island, etc.
