With this offer added to the mix, I have to add the following to my earlier post.
@ROGERS/@HTC
- The internet is search-able.
- You may think that offering the few complainers "on steroid" a Magic will solve your problems.
- However, this is a short term fix.
- The Internet is searchable and everyone who can't run some applications in the future will eventually look to upgrade to Donut and Eclair.
- And when they do, they will find this forum and other blogs
- They will learn the truth
- They will complain all the way to the Office of the president ( we have a precedent here)
- The problem will not go away
- It needs to be fixed properly
The FIX:
- An HTC Magic (or other upgradable phones) for all
- or An upgradability path for the HTC dream
Don't take that offer guys there trying to pawn off some other android phone on you that they are just tryying to clear out anyways. Those htc magics sell on kijiji for 250 now. The deal I got from rogers o of p seems like a much better deal. After argueing with with henri from the o of p for awhile I got them to offer me a blackberry 9700 for free. This is the newest blackberry on the market. Ya ya I can hear u all now" but I want an android phone not a shitty blackberry". That why as soon as you get it you do what I did and sell it for 500 to a friend. They are going for 550 on kijiji so you can sell it buy a magic and still have around $250 for yourself to pay some of your overpriced rogers bills. They also did not make me send back my dream which is what I'm typeing on now lol.
Michael,
Wow, just, um, wow.
Why did she go off on a Sense tangent?
I don't see where you asked about sense?!? Not only that, but on my Dream, even with apps loaded and running, I consistently had 20-40MB RAM available.
Now, if Sense requires more than 20-40MB RAM, then I think you folks are doing something a bit screwed up. But, again, we both KNOW RAM isn't the problem....
ATTENTION HTC:
There's only TWO (2,II) reasonable options here:
1) You're playing the Ignorance card (which isn't accepted here, so put it away)
2) Trying to blow smoke up our tailpipes
First off, if #2, it will NOT pay off for you in the long run...
As I've said before, the average buyer for the Android-based phone, is NOT a dumb schmuck.
If #1, well, I'll help you out, free of charge, not even a consulting fee:
There ya go! Free, full access to the Android source code, just as it has been for a LOOOOONG time. Heck, I have the source code on my home machines. You're telling me HTC doesn't have the Android 1.6 source code? I call BS on that - MAJOR BS!
But, we all know HTC has the source - I mean, HTC had to write quite a few of the drivers, didn't they? Yeah.... you know it, admit it already, and just SAY that you don't want to support already-sold-no-more-money-to-make-from phones... At least you'd have a chance at saving SOME face from being honest.
'nuff said
PS - Michael, don't feel TOO badly about a STUPID response from HTC.
I've sent no less than about 3-4 emails to them via the contact link since mid-December,a and have yet to receive a SINGLE response!
PPS - sorry for the long post, but it looks like HTC might've needed instructions on getting the Android source, since apparently they are claiming they don't have it. Just thought I'd do them a favor...

My coworker called Rogers last night and they offered him the Magic IF he renewed his contract.
Is this the case with everyone else?
I really don't want to be stuck with Rogers for another 3 years.

Just to let everyone know, with my deal and them sending me the 9700 blackberry for free and letting me keep my dream. I made it clear to them that they are not extending my contract and the o of p agreed with that. Don't take there bullshit deal, fight it to the end keep calling. It only took me 2 calls to the o of p to convince them on this deal. Do not send them back your phone, do not extend your contract, and don't take there offer of a magic as you should get the 9700 sell it on kijiji for 500 then you can buy the magic for 250 off kijiji aswell.
I should like to point out two things.
1. Members of Rogers staff ARE checking this blog routinely. If they believe everyone will do as you have suggested, they may very well just say "Tough luck" and offer Dream users nothing. Please don't jeopardize this for Dream users who legitimately want to exchange for a new phone, like the Magic, to get the update.
2. Even if Rogers didn't care, not everyone is the kind of person who is ready/willing/knowledgeable to sell something online. It is a risky proposition, fraught with fraud, so... caveat emptor.

@androidandrogersdontmix: No one is making a judgement of right or wrong. There is technically nothing wrong or illegal with what you did. I'm just saying, we don't want to be giving Rogers a reason to say no.
@boualem: For the record... No-Contract cost of HTC Dream at Rogers = $599.99. No-Contract cost of an iPhone 3G 8G = $580.00. So....
It would be great if we could here something from RogersMary about this as am sure after reading this forum and other sites and blogs that Dream users are not happy with with the HTC responses to the problem .It seems unless Rogers applies more pressure to HTC the problem needs to be dealt with via Rogers and what type of compensation they are going to provide.
Anything short of new phone (Magic,BB,Iphone) or 1.6 is unacceptable.
I think/hope that even rogers would see that as a mistake. Right now the only reason that rogers doesn't have people charging the corporate head quarters with pitchforks and torches is because 75% of the population that has the Dream and WANTS Android 1.6 has rooted their phone. I think/hope that rogers has realized this and they won't request another "perfect" SPL. Then again I have been wrong before, hell I have even been wrong earlier on today
