Unable to to connect to Gmail error! help!

I am frequently getting the notification that it is unable to connect to google/gmail account and it is asking me to enter the letters in the weird image to authenticate.
I am not sure why this happens multiple times in a day. The problem is the image letters are small and difficult to decipher at times. Any help to avoid this multiple authentication process is well appreciated.

What phone? what network? Are you rooted? Running a custom rom? Are you using the gmail app? Are you on 3g or wifi?

I am sorry, I should have been more clear. I am using HTC Inspire 4G and I have the original ROM through AT&T. I am on 3G network. I get the notification error message, irrespective of the fact whether I am using Mail app or not. The schedule to retrieve the messages is every 4 hours and that's when it happens (though not every 4 hours as it works fine for few hours).
It also happens when I go to the android market to download sometimes, as it needs gmail authentication, perhaps.

you should use the Gmail app for gmail, not the Mail app. If you are using the mail app and are getting errors, it's likely the account servers/ports arent set up properly.
