Question about Google Voice

I'm mostly using it for the texting, so I can send texts to people without having to pay for them. I realized, though, that when you receive a text on Google Voice, it also sends a text message to your regular number, which kinda defeats the purpose because, to my knowledge, don't you get charged for text messages you receive, too (and not just the ones you send)? Is there any way to set it up so that it doesn't send the texts to both your Google Voice number AND to your actual number, and just to the Google Voice number?

Go to a computer and go to voice.google.com. Sign-in and under options (for voice settings), I believe their is an option to text it to your main number. Uncheck that option.

The only option I see there is for them to send a text to my mobile number when I receive a voicemail. I don't see anything about forwarding the texts to my mobile number. There is an option for forwarding texts, but it's defaulted to select my e-mail address to forward them to, rather than my mobile phone number.

Yes, as directed, go into your "true" GV settings (on a desktop), go to "Voicemail and Text" and disable text forwarding.

Depending on how your phone is set up, you may have to also go to cell tab, and select your phone, and deselect Receive text messages on this phone.

Online, under the 'phone' tab, click 'edit' under your phone number. That is where the option to UNcheck 'receive text on this phone' is...make sure it's not checked.

(whooops, a tad late, slow typing lol)

Whether it "defeats the purpose" or not depends on the perceived purpose. There are certainly those who specifically want SMS forwarding enabled for whatever reason(s). As with anything, be careful assuming that your needs/wants are everyone else's.

Is there any way to make Google Voice notify you when you get a text, like, while your phone is locked (like a normal text message would)? Seems like it only notifies me when I unlock my phone, or go into the app itself.

It should play your alert tone and activate the LED light even if the screen is locked/sleeping. In the app, go to settings/synch and notifications and make sure you have a tone set and LED checked.
I don't usually lock my phone but do get notifications when the screen is off...

Do I maybe need to leave background data on (in the basic Android settings)? I swear my phone did notify me when I got a text earlier today while my phone was locked, but it stopped doing it afterwards, and only notified me after I unlocked it (sometimes not even until I clicked on the app). I can't remember if I had background data enabled at the time, or not, though.
