I don't think it matters that you have x10i installed instead of x10a or vice versa. The hardware is a little different, (antenna/power) but I don't think there is any difference in the software.
I think I have the wrong one installed too. It has been working fine for months.
if you want to go for 2.2 first you need to upgrade your phone to 2.1 so you have latest kernals etc as its a huge upgrade from 1.6
follow this thread: http://androidforums.com/x10-all-things-root/272949-flashtool-guide-how-n00bies.html
it should show you how to use the flashtool and get 2.1 on your X10
from there, you will need to root and install xRecovery and with that installed you can look at installing 2.2 or maybe even a 2.3 rom if thats what you fancy.
but firstly you need 2.1 to progress, if you have debranded you may be able to get 2.1 just by running Sony Ericssons Update Service.
failing that you will need to use the flashtool as per the link i posted above.
it sounds daunting but give it a shot and you will be surprised at how painless a process it is, just be sure to back up your contacts, all apps will need reinstalled as a back up from 1.6 wont work.
also bear in mind once you have installed 2.1 you will have to re-root before you can install xrecovery, once you have xrecovery installed the rest is very simple to do
