3dEvo: Pre-release miscellany

Well I am buying 4 of them. So I would rather not give out an interest free $400 loan with no expectations about when this device will be launched, or even how much it will end up costing me.

Sprint just needs to tell me when this device will be released and how much it will cost, and then I can plan accordingly. That seems like a pretty reasonable request to me.

out of curiosity, why are you buying four evo 3d's?

Did anyone else get this morning's Sprint EVO 3D update? Got very excited thinking they were going to announce THE date but...no date. Just more of the same stuff we knew long ago. Going back to see if there is a date hidden between the lines. lol

Yeah man.........they need to ANNOUNCE IT ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!

I got the email as well and see that it still says "coming soon"... it also says to watch your inbox for more exciting updates. I see that as encouraging. I didn't post about it because of so much speculation, but last week when I called my Sprint store about when I could pre-order he said to check back on June 1. Sooo....maybe a baby-step closer????!!!!

Did anyone watch the Nascar race Sunday night and see the evo 3d being strongly advertised?

Unfortunately the email offered nothing beyond what we already know now. It's been coming soon for over a month.

Yea. Pure spam. It contained nothing new; they really need to fire their marketing department. People don't want crap. If you have nothing to say then say nothing.

There's way too many factors involved to blame one group. Timelines do slip which is why the firm date hasn't been released. It could be a number of things like:

  • Supply Chain issues
  • Last minute changes to software
  • Any components coming from Japan?
  • Sprint having issues on their end with their crap software that's included
  • Creatives...
  • Inventory of existing phones they want to unload first, effecting financials
  • The list can go on...

I figured since this was the second Sprint email blast in two weeks, that we are in week two as described in the playbook. I still hope to see the phone on or before June 17, no way it can be far off if Sprint is sending a second promo email to customers.

True...BUT...I had also requested updates about the Nexus and it wasn't long after I received their "coming soon" email that it was available. I was looking to see if I still had that email so I could get an idea of how long it was but haven't been able to find it so I guess I deleted it.

Seems like more subscribers received the second email, judging from the immediate responses here. Either they were testing their email list or they really are getting close to launching this beast.

Yea I know that. My comment was not aimed at the actual release date but (a) sending out useless emails (b) lack of information.

I do believe that the device is likely delayed (with regards to the original time line) but since we did not know the original time line it is hard to tell :)

Also the lack luster reviews on the sensation makes me leary as to the quality of this device (esp the display) but maybe I'm reading too much into the relationship between the two devices.

If I remember correctly, last year Sprint sent out the same emails about the EVO and about 2 weeks after we got the email the EVO was released.

I think this phone will be out in the next 2 or 3 weeks.

Can't remember the exact time-frame but I know when I got my "coming soon" notification about the Nexus (I was considering it as well) it wasn't long after that it was released. Looked for the email in order to make a comparison but I guess I deleted it.

I was at the Coca - Cola 600 this weekend and saw one very vague commercial for the Evo 3d. Also while I was down in pit row I looked for Sprint employees..saw a few but they didn't have any Evo 3d's. They all looked busy so I didn't bother them to ask about a release date.

I think there's a reviewer's rule that S/AMOLED/+ _must_ always win over LCD of any type - unless it's an iPhone. Note those same reviewers that always choose OLED types tend to always highly rate the iP4 - the other criticism of LCDs fall away in praise of the magically retinal Apple display.

Predicted first real hands-on review of the Evo 3D: While the screen was bold, crisp and clear, with excellent colors we can't help but wonder how much better it would be if they'd left off the 3D gimmick. And it's no good in sunlight or at producing blacks because it's an LCD.

Predicted review if Apple does 3D: While it's an LCD, the retinal display with the new 3D feature once again schools everyone with what a display should be. Is there anything the new iPhone can't do?

I crack me up. Srsly tho, those are my predictions. :D :D

PS - The Engadget and Slashgear reviews spoke highly of the battery and responsiveness as I recall, fwiw.

I don't understand the PR. Why can't they say the release date? I emailed them, probably won't hear back but still worth a shot.. this is leading me to believe they dont have a firm release date yet.

I honestly can't stop laughing because this is absolutely going to happen. Dead on Early!

Over the last 2 days we have seen some action. Emails beeing sent out and the new Press Release this morning.

One of two things is going on:

1) Sprint is getting ready to release and is building up the anticipation

2) Phone is delayed has some problems and Sprint throwing us some tidbits here and there to keep us happy.

Not sure if it really means anything, but Sprint put out a "News Release" today:
Sprint Newsroom | Exciting Content Coming for this Summer?s Highly Anticipated Smartphone, HTC EVO 3D Exclusively from Sprint

and it looks like there is an update with a new link (check out 3D content) at Sprint- All Together Now

Yeah I saw that. I did not like reading the careful terminology that we can share USER-GENERATED video via DLNA and HDMI. I was hoping they would let us stream HTC Watch videos, etc. Maybe they will but again that terminology says otherwise to me.

I know you say this in jest; but several of the reviews for the sensation suggest it is tn and not ips/p-va from the very weak view angles. The droid x2 is suppose to have a rather decent lcd. I should check out the devices at a few of the stores. I know the original evo multi-vendor the lcd and some were distinctly better than others. a TN panel by nature does not imply horrible reproduction. The one on the acer iconia is rather decent (not sure if it is tn of p-va). The iphone 4 display is very good (ignoring the resolution) and from a marketing perspective apple (and samsung) are correct that the very first thing you use on these devices is the display.

I also place a high value on usability as a phone. Anyways my presumption is the sensation was suppose to represent htc best and as such it sounds a bit lack luster but I will freely admit I have not played with one to date.
