Missing the sylus...

Is it just me, or does anyone else miss the stylus and handwriting recognition from the Palm systems? I mean, the keyboards are convenient, but I often find myself wishing I could just take out a stylus and write.

Am I the only one?

I go back to the original Palm Pilot. Loved the stylus and especially the Graffitti way of entering letters.

When I got my HTC Inc I had troubles with fat fingers and the on screen keyboard. Tried Swype and could not get the hang of that. But while reading through the Android Apps Forum on this site I found a reference to an Android program called Graffitti. Down loaded it and voila I had the Palm Pilot way of entering letters

What I did was use my God given built in stylus. My right index finger. Even better than the one from Palm. No more reaching for the stylus on the phone and no more losing the stylus.

Give it a try. You will like it.

No, you're not the only one, but I have to say, now, ten months later, if I pick up my iQue I try to use my finger on the screen - it doesn't work! You will get used to it.

I had a REALLY hard time adjusting. I had to go find a capacitive stylus right away. After a few weeks I tossed it aside and haven't looked back. Been using the standard Android touch screen for 2 years now. Hadn't even thought about a stylus again until I saw this post.

I used to use a Pocket PC device with a stylus and handwriting recognition. I find that my HTC Desire Z with the physical keyboard is better for data entry. I even find the screen keyboard better than the stylus. Handwriting recognition has a larger learning curve for me than a keyboard or touch screen.

It's a stylus that works with capacitive touchscreens.

There are 2 types of touchscreens, resistive and capacitive.

Resistive touchscreens were used in older phones and relied on pressure to work. When pressed, it was virtually the same as pressing a button, albeit a very fancy one.

Capacitive touchscreens rely on the minute electrical current in your finger distorting the screens electrostatic field. There is a sensor which reads the location of your finger in relation to what's on screen. It allows things like multitouch etc and is generally much more responsive. It also means that you probably wouldn't be able use the screen with gloves on or with a stylus.

However, you can now purchase capacitive gloves and capacitive stylus'.

If you want a stylus then get one that works with your screen. It won't make your device suddenly have Graffiti support but I think there may be apps out there for that.

Personally, I don't miss Graffiti. Ditched it ages ago and never looked back.

Input methods always produce highly subjective preferences in people. Don't assume that your preferences for Swype and voice to text are universal. Android gives people the versatility that many OS's lack in this regard. Don't like the stock keyboard? Replace it.

I just retired my old Palm Tungsten T3 last week. I was a bit apprehensive about losing the stylus and since Swype is not activated by default, I was a little disappointed with tap, tap tapping everything. After starting to use Swype though, I'm happy! It's not perfect, but neither was Graffiti...just takes practice.

I was never big on styli or touchscreens until my G1...I had an mda and never used the stylus. In fact I bought a dash and gave the mda to my sister
