Gingerbread impressions/tips/problems NON ROOTED STOCK ONLY

Here's something else I noticed today. I have a few groups set up in my contacts. When you go into contacts, you always see them alphabetically by first name. And before, when you went into a group, it showed the group alphabetically too, but not anymore. THere's no rhyme or reason to the order inside the groups.

...and the calculator seems a tad different, anyone notice that?

Same thing here with contacts...no discernible order to them within groups. If I click on 'edit' though, then they temporarily appear in correct alphabetical order again. Have not found a way to correct this.

Well if you don't want to do a hard reset, your only option is to wait for a fix or update. in regards to Juice Defender... I am not sure, I have never used it, but it wont hurt for you to uninstall it and reboot your phone and test it and see if you get better battery life.

I'd say it's not juice defender. I use that and the battery life is awesome compared to before. And battery life was never a complaint of mine at all.

OK, so i purchased MyBackup pro for 4.99 and did a factory reset...I've been sitting here online for a while while BackupPro is restoring my phone...That completed and now I was told to restart the phone...

BUT I STILL GET THE VOICEMAIL NOTIFICATION!!!!
Also I signed back in in the market for my google account, I still do not have my contacts back...does that take time to refresh?

I honestly can't tell you how to fix the voicemail notification issue. Only input I had was with regard to Juice Defender because I currently have that on my phone and wasn't having the same issues as you are.

As for the contacts, once you log onto your google account (not on the market, but the actual phone), your phone should start populating the contacts that you had saved. I don't have Mybackup Pro on my phone, so I couldn't really give you feedback on how that thing works.

Thank you Drex...The first time I did the restore for Backup...i didnt restore contacts as I assumed Google would do it for me...but it only did current contacts, after i purchased the EVO and not a MAJORITY of the people I talk with.

So I reset phone again and updating contacts with backup pro. i will let you know if it works!

I'm certainly no celebrity, but in the fitness industry my name is out there so my personal page has maxed out it's friends limit...

god this better work!!!! AGGHHHHHHH lol

Today a Sprint Technical Service rep told me HTC is pushing out a patch next Tuesday, 21 June or Wednesday, 22 June desgined to fix the vm notification bug and others. She made an appointment to call me back on June 22 to see if the patch fixed my bugs.

Take this for what it is worth, which is probably not a whole lot.

^Thanks, well at least it's something. I know the notification thing is causing me an actual issue other than IT ANNOYS THE HELL OUT OF ME! :D

The reset did not work for me, so another few days shouldn't be that bad.

How did you do the factory reset? through the menus or did you hold down the power button and the low volume button? when I did it through the menus it didn't get rid of my voicemail issue either... so I redid it again but this time I did a hard reset by pressing the power button and volume key. When I did it that time it worked.

What voicemail notification bug? Talking about when the notification appears and you can't get rid of it? You go into applications and clear data for the voicemail app. That is not a gingerbread thing because this has happened once prior to Froyo. Not rocket science or a bug if it only happens once. Just we have neewbs that don't understand how to fix minor issues with Android.

Anyone have an update on generic android icons showing up instead of the real app's icon in folders?

I don't have an answer, but after looking around I think I see something that sticks out. Maybe someone smarter than I can look into this more and see what they think. Or we can all just wait until there is an update.

So, I have about 10 apps in a folder on my home screen. Of the 10, 6 show up as generic, and the other 4 have their actual app logo.

I went into ASTRO file manager, then to mnt/asec/ and found a folder for every app that does not show up with an app logo with its .apk, but did not see any folders for the apps that are showing up correctly. Since I needed to get into the /data folder and ASTRO does not have root access, I downloaded Ghost Commander and navigated to the data folder: root://./data and was able to find ALL of my apps located here.

So...is it possible that the system looks at the mnt/asec folder BEFORE the /data folder, and if it finds the .apk, then it will not show a proper app logo?

Another side note: I went ahead and put a few more shortcuts into the same folder, some were apps that I found in the mnt/asec/ folder, and some were not.

I did a restart of my phone and reopened the folder and the apps that were in the mnt/asec/ folder had generic icons, whereas the ones not located in this directory showed up with the proper app's icon.

Have no fear, seems like the new update coming next week actually has some legs:

HTC EVO 4G to get another update in 5 days, Netflix is coming back – Android and Me

To me it looks like it shows up in the order you put them in, because I just added a new contact to a group yesterday and it showed up last within that group, even though the contact started with the letter "D".

Also, I'm now starting to get some of my icons showing up as generic android icons vs the app icon. To fix, I switched to launcher pro and it seems to be all good now...

All I know is that on my EVO its only the apps that I moved to my SD card and are in a folder. If I move them to the phone they show up fine.

All I do to get them to come back is switch scenes, then back again. Annoying, but not to big of a deal

For what it's worth, my ghost voicemail notifications have gone away. I didn't do anything special besides clearing out BOTH visual voicemail and legacy voicemail boxes (dial your own number through the dialer). When the notification would pop up, I would just clear it in the "Call" settings. I haven't received any notifications in about 5 days or so. Everything else works great!

Glad the update is coming though.

My HDMI out is working, played some videos on my TV the other day.

My camera app though is crashing randomly when I try to take a picture and has rebooted the phone once.

Forgive me if this has been covered. Since I and my wife updated to gingerbread when exit certain applications it takes us to a white htc screen and then "loading." This slows down the ability to use the phone considerably. Is there a work around or is this just now a known issue? Been searching the forum for answers but I must not be using the right search terms.

FWIW,

I have had this phone since June 4th 2010 and have had no real issues with either it, or the SD card. (16GB) After this update, I am constantly having to remove the battery, pull out the card, and reseat it...just so that it is recognized. This is unacceptable. I have changed NOTHING, yet the update causes the SD card to become unrecognizable by the phone. I have backed up the entire contents of the card to my PC and have done a complete restore. I still have times when my custom ringtones won't work, and data that lives on the card is made unavailable to the phone.

Cmon HTC or Google...or Sprint!!! FIX THIS NOW.

Hopefully the patch will address this issue. It happened because of the update, and I have seen NOTHING that really made it worth updating for. Battery life hasn't changed at all.

Crossing fingers for the patch to step up HTC's game....or maybe it's time to get a new phone.

Exclusive: EVO 4G OTA Update Coming June 20th – Fixes Netflix, Voicemail Notifications | Android News, Apps, Games, Phones, Tablets - Android Police

I hope it will fix the poorer battery performance I been having since the GB update. I used to consistently get 5+ hour of active use(measure by display on time) out of my phone on 3.70 firmware, but since the update, i been struggling to get 4 hour of active use from my phone. While standby battery usage hasn't change much, active usage battery drain has definitely gotten worst.

Officially the update was only bug fixes:
1. Bring NetFlix streaming back
2. Fix ghost VM notification issue.
3. Fix missing hearing aid compatibility issue.

But i am hoping that there is a kernel change as well. I think the poorer battery performance is mainly due to the kernel. So I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Oh and other wishes:
1. 2.3.4 update, to allow integrated Google video chat
2. Senses update, to bring the EVO to senses 2.0, along with rotatable landscape home-screen and menus (highly unlikely, but still hoping it will happen)
3. New WiMax driver/firmware. Battery life with WiMax on has always been horrible with the Evo, I am hoping one day HTC will release a firmware update for the WiMax radio that won't suck the battery dry in less then 1 day. (also unlikely, but hopeful)

I could see them trying to squeeze in 2.3.4 but Sense 2.x will probably be out of the question. They updated our Sense 1.x so that it includes the flippy clock (that actually flips) but considering the limited ROM space, I doubt we'll see Sense 2.x on the EVO 4G. I just wish they would give us an option to have Sense or Stock android.
