Optimize your Droid Eris battery life (READ THIS)

I went to a hockey game last night and for about three hours had at best 1 bar of service in the arena. I never lost service, but it was low. Within that time, my battery went from 99% to 65%. Fortunately, my home isn't one of those places.

For what it's worth, I had a Moto Droid for 2 weeks and did not have these battery issues. It's some kind of signal/battery correlation with the Eris.

Ok--so you went from a moto droid to eris?? Can I ask why? As I said, I LOVE it, just want to be able to use the internet. I went in to my local verizon store last week, and did find one person who was in for a tech issue with her moto droid--she said she started with the eris and kept it one week, changed to moto and doesn't have battery issues.......but I like my eris........:(

I woke up one morning and my Moto Droid wouldn't turn on. It had shut off during the night and turned into a brick. VZW couldn't even get it on. I've never had luck with Motorolas.

The keyboard is what drew me to the Droid, but found it to be more of a hassle. The phone is bulky - not pocket friendly. I found the power button to be in an awkward place. Also, lack of trackball and other physical keys made some basic functions tedious.

I love my Eris. Just wish I knew when I was getting into a low signal area so I could shut off my mobile network quicker to conserve battery! If I lived in a place that had low signal, there is no doubt that I'd have to get a different phone.

With good signal, I get two days on a charge.

Well, your comments on the moto droid makes me realize I don't want to go to that. So if I decide not to stay with Eris guess it will be a Blackberry(not sure which, curve 2, tour or storm?) Anyway, I have another week to decide.
It does seem my battery is doing better today for some reason. At 98% and has been unplugged for over 2 hours--usually about 85% by now. Signal is horrible today, too.
Does anyone know if the update to 2.1 will help the signal/battery drain issue?? Maybe that update will come Friday and I will have a chance to see...........

I can get 3 days of battery life on my Droid Eris if I don't use Pandora.

I have Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS, and always on mobile networks turned off. Also screen brightness turned down and lots of other things suggested by this thread.

This may have been said here but there are a lot of pages to sift through. If I turn off the auto background sync for Google services how can I manually sync my calendar and contacts and such?

I've come to this conclusion(i'm probably not the first one to come to this conclusion),its os related. I've tired the menu code trick, optimize my settings, updated apps and os and returned the eris and swapped for new factory battery.I leave it on the charging dock every night.when i first turn it on sometimes it reads 100%, 95%,96% and one time 85%. So hopefully the next major upgrade will fix it.

I just noticed that this morning. i turned it on and it dropped to 95%. I hadn't even done anything yet. My old WinMo phone did all the same amount of syncing in the background and could still go a day and a half at least. Is that rumor of some kind of update on the 22nd still floating around?

turned it on today and it was at 90% and within 1min dropped to 87%. can't wait for this update.

Well, mine is definitely doing better. Yesterday it had 20% at 15 hours after unplugging. And I surfed the web, checked email, played games, downloaded dolphin browser, son downloaded a book to aldiko app, and used cardiotrainer for a walk. AND even talked and texted. Used exactly how I hoped I could(at home with bad signal, in town with fair/good signal). So I'm putting off ordering the 1750 battery for now. Not completely sure what I did different(I had completed 4 days of complete battery drain/charging), we'll see how it is today. Has been off charger for 4 hours now, only checked email for about 5 minutes during breakfast, at 95%.
I did see a lady who I had seen at the verizon store last week who had gotten the eris the week before I did and changed to the moto when I got the eris. She is having trouble with her moto(can't get email set up, my son and I both tried to do it, she gets errors), and they can't seem to help her. I showed her some things on mine, and she said "I should have kept that one". BUT mine was at 60% at that time(around 4 pm, off charger app. 8 hours), she had her moto at school all day(teacher), had only used for phone, and she had a full battery. So I went to my verizon store again to ask a few ?s about signal. They said the motos for some reason are keeping the 3G signal all the time, and they think that is why the battery is better on them. They also said our area is scheduled to be full 3G by end of 2nd quarter. They are working on getting all towers 3G now, and think that is why the phones are bouncing back and forth so much.
SO, I feel much better. Really appreciate all the help and comments here. This forum has helped me so much. I want to encourage all the new eris owners who might be having the battery issues to read all the tips and keep tweaking. I'm convinced it is a better phone than the moto droid, despite that phone's hype!
In closing I have one question/clarification---at what percentage do I charge my phone. At 11pm last night I was playing teeter, turning on the flashlight in quick settings, and calling it repeatedly and letting it ring, etc. etc. to get it below 10% to charge. I wasted my time, right? Should I have just put on charger at 20%? :o

i "have" both the droid (wife's) and the eris (mine), her battery way outlasts mine. i mess with my phone all day tho. the signal on hers is always 3 bars in our house, mine is at best 1 bar. so i'm pretty sure, along with me effing with it, the signal battle DRAINS your battery.

dunno what my point is or was lol

;)

I see your point!! The moto has better signal reception. I don't have any idea why, I am sure many would argue it is because motorola phones are better. But your example certainly is evidence that there is a difference in their signal reception. :)

oh funny little fact......

while sleeping my phone is next to our baby monitor (stay at home dad, gotta get up often  ) on my side of the bed, creating a small amount of interference with the baby monitor signal, now when she picks up her phone on the other side of the bed to say check a txt or lol play solitare, that interference is way way way louder and present. telling me that the antenna or signal to that phone is way stronger.

weird huh.....

sorry kinda off topic :p

My friends' who have LG's & Samsungs get better reception than my Eris. Everything you said is consistent to what I experience.

It's been mentioned here a couple of times, but someone should call attention to the very handy use of the app "Spare Parts".

In no uncertain terms, the 'Battery history' option in this program (the first selection as soon as you open this app) lets you see, unabashedly, what is eating your battery.

I select CPU Usage, and 'Since last unplugged', to see what has eaten the CPU the most since, say, 3 hours ago. I can say to myself, well, I used/didn't use that app, and I should a) uninstall it, b) check its options to see if it's syncing with the network, and if I can reduce its frequency, or c) eliminate automatic network activity from that app.

It also may be useful to (and here is one of the good arguments for a task killer, as some people think you don't need one) KILL some tasks before putting your phone down for a while. Some apps will continue doing things and take up processor time and 'Partial Wake' time (which this app also lists) - such as, very often, Browser. When I know I'm setting my phone down for a while, I make sure I use a task killing app to kill all the tasks that I didn't have 'ignore/exclude' set for.

This saves tremendous battery.

I just downloaded it and noticed that my sensor use is rather high in regards to the Android System. Should I turn off the automatic orientation switching? And if I do how do I get the phone to go into landscape mode manually?

I have followed most of the steps and have noticed a significant increase in my droid eris battery. Thanks for all the help! I really love this phone and now love it even more!:)

I wouldn't, what is rather high? mine is normally maybe 10% of the meter bar..

Good to hear :)

I'd say it's around that. I'm looking at total time: 25 minutes, 58 seconds since I unplugged at 4:30 AM this morning.

How is spare parts different than quick settings? I have qs--do I need both? Or switch to spare parts? My battery life has increased significantly this week--last week would be dead at about 11 hours off charger--the last 2 nights at 20% at 15 hours off charger, and doing more on my phone. Think the biggest change was in turning off gps unless I am using it(cardiotrainer for walks). Anyway, appreciate an answer about spare parts!
I will say again, I so appreciate this forum!! Love my Eris!!
