I was super nervous about rooting and changing the rom on my OSF as well. I read the stickied guides but I still wasn't 100% clear (I'm a bit of a thicko!). Thankfully on these hallowed forums there are some real blademasters. El Presidente, Shadowninty and dannymur answered a million of my daft questions and gave me the confidence to take the plunge and try changing roms.
I had my orange bloatware for one evening before switching to Swedish Spring (2.2 - Froyo). The handset was much nicer afterwards.
Last night (two weeks after getting my handset) I upgraded to Gen2 and installed CyanogenMod7 (2.3.4 - Gingerbread). I'm not sure which rom I prefer yet but I love being able to choose.
I love my OSF, I love Android and I love these forums!
