ringtone for incoming text but no others?

oh, mystic oracle(s) of droidness, please consider my conundrum:

i would like to have my droid X (v2.3.3) make a notification sound when a text comes in, but do not want it to make a sound for any other notifications. is this possible? it seems i can either have sound notifications ON or OFF, but can't find a way to assign y/n to individual functions.

Two ways I can think of to do this. One, set your text notification in the text app, then go into the other apps, like Gmail, Mail, Facebook, etc, and just disable notifications. This will work, however you just wont get any notifications for the other things.

The other way I can think of, create an mp3 with a few seconds of silence. Then go to menu-settings-sound, and set that for your notifications ringtone. Then go into your text app, and set that separately.
