Is the Galaxy worth it at this point?

I.B. Pimpin

Newbie
I am thinking about purchasing a Galaxy 10.1 but my brother told me to wait because an updated Galaxy Tab (Quad Core??) may be coming out this year. Any truth to this?

That is very unlikely and doesn't really make sense because the 10.1 is still brand new to the market. The wireless network one is only weeks old. The next one being released is the 7 inch version. An upgrade to the 10.1 would be mid '12 IMO. Also, I do not think chasing a quad core is even worth your time since there are very few apps that even take advantage of dual core now. Ones that can take advantage of quad core are definitely going to be mid '12.

Agreed, how many cores does one need to send emails and play Angry Birds? Please note that while my experience may be unique, I am on my 3rd Galaxy Tab 10.1 while my first Asus Transformer has been flawless thus far.

I wouldn't dismiss the possibility of a Kal-el (the upcoming quad-core nvidia Tegra 3 chip) tablet from Samsung by the end of the year. Apple owns the tablet market and everyone is doing everything they can to catch up. Rumor has it that Asus is going to have a new Kal-el tablet for the holiday season and I can't imagine Samsung would be any different. I think everyone is coming out swinging and throwing as much development into the best products possible. It wouldn't hurt to at least wait until the holiday season. Even if there isn't a Kal-el tab, there will be some killer sales in order to compete with Apple for Christmas tree floor space.

Frankly, as my two week trial nears it's end I am thinking my new Mac Air 13" with Windows 7 is all I am going to need moving forward at least for now. The System as it stands is still 3/4 baked IMHO. As for needs and processors - By this time next year you'll see Quad core tablets - Why? Same reason you can buy a 16 mega-pixel compact camera with a sensor the size of a pin head that still takes lousy pictures - Marketing baby!!

Samsug 10.1 is my choice for now if u say money to burn dont buy just go to youtube and watch someone unbox it sense you cant afford one android has no limit.android is the shit. If you dont like android and ur a apple fan get off tha threads. Android pisses on apple

I think it is worth it. I just got mine the other day and I like it a lot. I have used a few different tablets and the Tab 10.1 is one of the best I used so far. You will not regret buying it you will love it from day one

I have an asus transformer and an ipad. I like them both for different reasons so I guess I'm a fan of both. No need to slam ipad users. When the ipad 3 comes out I'll buy one and when amazon releases their new tablet I'll probably get one of those as well. Why so much anger at ipad users? Jealous? Theres room for everyone.

Thank you Frisco, now is the locking up of this tablet enough to make one pass on it? When I did the upgrade on the asus it seemed to make it slightly less responsive. Looking for a spare tablet, seemed to have tried most of them with mixed results. New amazon may fill the bill but still a rumor at present. My lenovo k1 has already locked up a couple times during movie playback, cant find much feedback on it yet. Support seems to be a problem with some, needing "senior support" for issues and for novices like me we need good support.

One of the biggest complaints across many Android devices, from tabs to phones, is lack of good support and even documentation. If a search is done via Google we can often find user guide pdf files for download, though:

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 User Guide Manual PDF Download - Reviews, Manuals, Software and Drivers of Gadgets

That's the 10.1 specifically. It sounds like you've got several pots on the fire ;) and may need to search around one each one for remedies.

My two cents on the choices you're facing, I'd never purchase a unit that I was not excited about, plain and simple. If confidence is chipped away by reports and reviews that seem negative, then I'd move on and above all play with the likely candidate devices in the store.

Thanks, my problem, and guessing I'm not alone, is I'm excited about all of them and then the problems start. I'm liking the lenovo k1 but we're still in the honeymoon period. I have found it very responsive so far. The asus slowed down after I did the last upgrade and mixed reports on the galaxy. Like the ipad but dont have the apple or death mentality but it has been reliable. Keep waiting for the "perfect" tablet. Keeping fingers crossed on amazons hollywood.

@grandma pat and OP, you will never find a perfect tablet, just one with less cons and more pros than the others based on your use and need (not others). there will be cons, no matter how expensive or cheap, who manufactures it, what size, what OS, etc.

good luck.
