I was getting the dreaded "memory full" errors, so I followed the only advice I've seen that actually did something to stop them for me: clear data from the Media Storage app. My ringtones *seemed* to have been wiped, but when I examined the sdcard/media/audio/ringtones folder, they were all still there. Rebooting the phone didn't cause the media scanner to restore whatever index Android (Froyo) uses to recognize them.
I read elsewhere in the forums that the developers claim the media scanner looks for these files in the "external storage" root (sdcard) in folders called Music, Ringtones, Alarms, etc. I've seen no such implied consistency in my Samsung Captivate -- Music and Sounds (the latter not mentioned in the dev doc) contain only indexes, there are no Ringtones or Alarms folders, Pictures is empty, etc. Apparently actual devices collect these things in other places like media/audio, but that doesn't explain why the media scanner can't find them where it did before. (For the first time ever, I'm wishing I'd bought an iPhone!)
Can someone point me to a way to fix this quickly? I'm right in the middle of a move, and my phone picked a disastrous moment to reduce its repertoire of meaningful ringtones to a single default. Every few minutes I have to drop what I'm doing to discover if the notifications are for crucial mover calls or lousy email spam! Thanks.
