How to keep Facebook and G+ from running in the background?

Yes, i'm already well aware of Android and it's excellent task managing, but I have at any given time <20mb free in memory and G+/Facebook is taking up approx. 40mb of RAM.

I rarely use them let alone need them running in the background... Already set facebook to notifications off but it remains running .

System is hanging when exiting some apps and short memory, but when I have more free memory it seems to not have the problem at all, so how do I stop these hogs, short of uninstalling?

you can search "ADVANCED TASK KILLER FREE" in the android market download and install the app. open app and select apps witch apps u wanna kill and select kill selected apps

That is not the answer, task killers do more harm than good. If you kill those apps they will just start again, thus wasting more battery in the process. The only way to keep them from running in background is to uninstall them (if you are able) or to root your device and freeze them with titanium

"task killers do more harm than good"... only if you don't use it correctly and kill all apps instead of targeting only the problem apps. They work great for clearing out many memory wasting apps that bring your phone down to a crawl. Without ATK I'd be rebooting my phone at least twice a day.

It's not a complete solution (as apps will eventually restart), but it is a huge help.

If you feel like you HAVE to have a task killer for certain apps, than you might want to look at said apps instead of getting a task killer. Those apps may be running for malicious reasons. Or you could have too many apps installed for your phone to handle. I have over 60 apps (I've heard some people installing 100+ with no problems) installed on my phone, (1 GHz single core) not one of them is a task killer and I never have problems with the phone slowing down.

This..

I currently have over 270 apps installed on my phone...

Single core Incredible btw

For Google+ I highly recommend the mobile website for that. If you set location awareness on in the browser, it will even do Nearby posts for you - and you can swipe left-right to get to incoming, just like the app.

The Google+ app started crushing my battery after one of its early updates. If you don't care about G+ notifications, the mobile web for it is 100% the way to go.

FWIW - Boat Browser Mini is a great compact browser. It's the opposite of the big browsers like Dolphin HD or Xscope or like that. Small, fast, works great, especially for the application I'm suggesting here. And - it features a true exit capability, so no worries about the Boat browser running when you don't want it to.

~~~~~
Facebook - I don't use it, but from working across various forums two things seem clear to me: first, that it can be a bit hoggy and second, that seems to vary by phone type and which Facebook app is being used.
Noting you're not using notifications, so depending upon your Facebook needs, perhaps see if mobile browsing or other FB apps can help you with this.
~~~~~

Nice thing about a mobile browsing solution - leave that page and you've left behind any transactions with that service.

Thanks for the advice here... Will likely follow this...

It seems amazing to me I can't choose to not have these running in the background... I don't need or want the notifications or any of the G+/Facebook services running in BG....

Is the mobile web version of G+ different that what I would get when just going to the regular link via a web browser? Now I'm using Opera and it seems to be great, but will give this other one a try...

Regarding task killers, beyond whether they're good to use or not, killing G+ and Facebook doesn't work out as they both just come right back...and using "aggressive" mode seems pointless and battery killing...so haven't gone there...

I think I will freeze Facebook and uninstall G+ for now...and see if it has any effect on the system hanging when exiting some apps... It SEEMS to come instantly back when there's 30-50mb free and hangs when only 15-20mb free in RAM, but could be other factors... will see what happens...

Cheers,
Damian

Despite the task killer concept being questionable, it seems Motorola at least come bundled with this app as well. So if manufacturers bundled task killer apps as their offering, it throw the whole concept into more mystery isn't it?

How I wish Motorola would explain why they build a task killer app for their users though.

Another option that hasn't been mentioned is to disable the RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED permission on the app(s) in question. If an app doesn't know you just started/restarted your device, then it won't run until you actually use it the first time. This can be done quite easily with the Permissions Denied app (free). It does require root access though.

I just disable Google+ notifications in Setting --> Accounts & Sync

When you leave the G+ app by using that back button it does not run in the backgroud if you disable notifications.
