DVD Ripping Setting Questions?

*I placed this in the Atrix 4G thread as well for the specific's to my device. I thought it would be a good idea to try here for the general answers regarding Ripping DVD's for video playback on mobil devices.*

Hi All, I tried to see if there was another discussion regarding this, but couldn't find one. So I'm getting ready to go out of town and have been playing around with DVD video conversion to play back on the Atrix. (So far, so good.) I must say, I am very impressed with video play back on the Atrix. I bought a seperate 8 GB card, to store the movies on, to watch while I travel. I'm still working out a few more tweaks with the conversion process, but for the most part, I think I've got it. her are my questions. By the way, I'm using "Leawo DVD Ripper"

1) For some reason I can't get the picture to cover the whole screen using H.264 MP4 video format at a bitrate of 1000; high quilty video of 1280*720. It covers 80% of the screen, but there are black bars on the right and left side of the picture. (These are not on the original copy.) What would be some settings to try and have the picture to take up the whole screen?

2) I know that the lower the bitrate, the small the video size and less time it take to convert the video. Is there a difference in the audio, video or play back when using a lower or higher bitrate? (One 2hrs. 15 min. movie at a bitrate of 1000, took almost 4hrs to convert and size was around 1.3 GB.)

3) Since I can see the video in the gallery app, can I play the movie thru the HDMI cable only, using the entertainment center?

Thanks again for all your help. I really like the fact that I can now leave my portable DVD player at home now and only need to use my phone. Thanks Motorola for a great product.

1. I also use this software before. As I know the resolution of DVD is about 720*480, and as for me, I always set the output resolution as 720*480, and the aspect as "Auto". After that, the output video will not change the quality and aspect. If you convert your DVD as 720P video, your quality will become worse and also will take much more size.
2. Yes, if you set the sound quality as low, it will decrease the size, but it will not so obvious. You can set the image quality as low, and it will decrease the size much, but you can not enjoy good video.
3. The third one I have never tried, sorry.

Have you tried handbrake? It's freeware and the documentation (which you can find online without installing the program) has a detailed explanation on loose and strict anamorphic. Not sure it will solve your problem but probably worth looking into.

Thanks. This is very helpful. I have had a chance to play around with the setting some more, since my last post. I do see that depending on the video source, some of the settings I have to change. For example, I have converted movies from VHS tapes, satellite receiver and some movies where recorded in Letter Box and full screen format. So the settings are different, to obtain the same output. I still have the black bars on the side, but can live with that. I will try the 720*480 resolutions setting and report back.

When I get a chance, I will look them up. Thanks

Yes, it depends on the source, and not all of the DVD resolution is 720*480, with this kind of DVD, sometimes we still can get black bar with any tools. And if the resolution of devices was different from DVD, it would also get black bars when you playback video with it. But whatever, the first point of video is just keep the same aspect ratio, otherwise no matter how HD, we still feel so uncomfortable.
