Root Can I root even though my phone is locked to my carrier?

Hi there,

I know my phone is locked to my carrier because when I tried to install 2.3.5 by flashing my phone and the SIM card wouldn't work without the original firmware. Also, whenever I boot the phone, there's a screen showing my carrier's name.

What I'd like to know is if the same thing will most-likely happen to my SIM card if I decide to root my phone. I can't find my carrier's firmware online so if this doesn't work, I won't be able to make call/create texts and vice versa.

Although I am not familiar with your phone, I rooted my (Orange UK branded) Desire HD and I had no problems.

A possible reason that you had issues when trying to flash 2.3.5 on to your phone may be that you were trying to flash a non carrier-branded firmware on a carrier-branded phone... if you were to root, it should get rid of carrier-branding - you would most likely have to create a goldcard as part of the rooting process (a goldcard tricks your phone in to letting you flash non-branded firmware on your phone).

As I said, I am not familiar with your phone, but I am relatively sure that, by rooting your phone, you would be able to update it without problems. The usual warnings go with rooting... it voids any warrantee and you do it at your own risk, but I highly recomend it. All I would suggest is read, read and read again... if you're not sure - post on here... I don't normally check in here, but feel free to drop me a pm and I'll try and help if you want!!

Thank you for your reply! Thing is I'd like to be a 100% sure it's gonna work because I already brought my phone back to my carrier because of my 2.3.5 failed updated and they gave me a new one back.

You may want to check this out - it is a guide on how to root your phone... just so you can ensure that you were rooting/flashing in the same way.

Having looked on the net, I've not been able find anything about needing to use a goldcard, so I may have been wrong on that!
