8GB or 16GB what is it for Razr?

I just got my new Razr yesterday and when setting it up I noticed it only had 8gb of internal memory all the specs I read from Motorola say it's suppose to have 16gb.
What's up? What does everyone else have on their phones? :confused:
 
I'm not sure how the 16GB flash is partitioned but there is definitely more than 8GB. Internal storage is listed as 8GB and there is Application storage showing the available space remaining. All of this is carved out of the same flash memory with the 16GB microSD flash card being the remaining storage. I currently have 2.2GB remaining Application storage. Probably the remainder of the 16GB is used by Android. It would be nice to see a partition map of the entire 16GB memory though.
 
Even if the Android OS uses 50% of the internal space, the specs should show that it comes with 16GB internal, 50% of which is utilized by the OS. When I also realized my 16GB microSD card was not working the storage amount became unacceptable.
Perhaps it's the price I pay for being too early an adopter, but broken equipment + deviously described specs = replacement phone.
I will go into a Verizon store today and hopefully get this resolved and report back. :confused:

- 1.1gb for format parameters (all memory does this)
- 2.5gb for user apps
- 3.4(ish)gb for Webtop BOOOOOOO!
- 1(ish)gb for OS and stock apps
Balance = 8gb

The Webtop and OS allocation are gray, since do not know actual total, but that is the correct remainder, based on the known of user app space and format parameters. The real internal space that should be left is about 11.4gb, but Webtop sucks it away. Should be an option to disable and reclaim the space.

OS allocation could be 1.5gb and WebOS 3gb. WebOS is several GB, none the less.
 
I have the same problem, I bought the new razr on Tuesday and noticed when I went into settings that it only had 8gb TOTAL internal storage. I called Verizon and the girl I talked to in escalations was as baffled as I was, she said the test unit she had also only had 8gb. She called Motorola directly but they were unaware of any issues and said that the unit should have 16gb. She was going to look into it further to see if more people contact them so they can get motorola to recognize the problem and get it fixed either with a software up date or by sending out new units with the correct gb. She is going to call me back Tuesday morning. By the way my son got the white razr and it has the same issue.
 
I just looked at my phone which was purchased 2 months ago, and it also shows Total space 8.00GB. Available space 5.09GB ??? Were we ripped off by Moto? Do we need to do a class action lawsuit against Moto? Maybe time will tell.

In order to have a lawsuit you would need to have damages. I am not sure that you have exprienced "damages" other than maybe not totally understanding where the memory is going.

Lawsuits, specifically when you are not sure why you are suing are frivolous. :cool:

I too have 8 internal, but assume that the other 8 are being used up by "phone stuff" :)

Here is how the file structure is set up and why you are not seeing 16 Gb in one location in the internal memory.


A breakdown of memory usage is as follows:
  • 4GB Used: Operating system, Webtop and preloaded applications
  • 4GB: Application storage for user downloaded applications, visible under Menu > Settings > Storage
  • 8GB: Internal storage for user content: pictures, music, videos, visible under Menu > Applications > Applications storage
  • 16GB: External storage (SD card) for user content: pictures, music, videos, visible under Settings > Storage

Internal Memory- 2.5 of 3GB free.
Memory Card 9.6 of 14.8GB free.

If I need more storage on my phone ill just upgrade to a 32GB SD card.
I also have a Dropbox account - 2 GB there
A SugarSync account - 5 GB there
A Box account 5 - GB there.

This according to my SanDisk Memory Zone app.

With all the cloud storage available today and the ability to backup almost anything to your home PC, via Splashtop, and other such apps, Unless you download anything and everything, you should never run out of storage space.
 
The internal memory is 16 but as others have said it is partition so the effective (usable in the normal sense) is 8. There is no grounds for a suite as the hardware is physically 16gb.

I thought about repartitioning but not sure it would play nice with updates. Anyways I've no clue wahtt he fuss is just add a larger sd if you need the space.

I mean we coudl argue over the fact that data is stored in blocks and for small files most of the space is unused; but what's the point :)

Btw fry has samsung 32gb class 10 sd for $35. Bit over kill for a phone but if you carry your camera with your phone might be useful :)

Unless they redesign the phone for you, they can't change anything. See the quote below for the answer they should have told you:

Does anyone actually have any concrete documented evidence that there is actually 16 gb of internal memory on board? Or is it just speculation? If so, please provide the source of the information.

The point here is that the advertising is at best misleading but more likely deceptive.
If the unit has 16gb internal memory then it should report in the settings as 16 gb total/8gb available, not 8 gb total/8 gb available.

The evidence is the fact that apart from 8GB you have available for media, you also have around 3.5B reserved for apps, WebTop takes a lot of space plus the OS also takes a lot. If there was not 16GB, all that would not be there.
 
Hi, I'm new here and don't pretend to be an expert....BUT...my droid incredible supposedly had 8GB of internal storage. If I went to the settings it didn't say 4GB total internal storage because the other 4GB was taken up by OS.

I contacted Verizon Tech Support and they seemed as dumbfounded as I in regard to why it says 8GB when the Razr has been aggressively marketed as a 16GB internal storage phone. The tech person stated they would be sending me an SD card to make up for the difference which I am grateful for.

I searched all over trying to find out information and stumbled across this forum. Hope to poke around and learn how to get the most out of this phone. Other than the GB issue, this phone is a huge upgrade for me coming from the incredible and I'm lovin it.
 
I know every Apple i-Device and iPhone does the same thing with total storage written on the shiny packaging versus what you get. And it's all because of software/iOS using the same memory. It's not the end of the world, get a memory card online for next to nothing. I don't think this is law suit worthy, not even really worthy of talking to a lawyer about. But the amount that the Razr uses up is substantially more only because of the partitioning of the dedicated application saving area.

For that matter, computers MFGs do the same thing. They show xGB of RAM and xGB of drive storage, but the OS and preinstalled software take up a noticeable amount of both, so you don't actually get to USE it all. This is not really anything 'new' in the world of devices. MFGs report TOTAL ram/storage, not the usable amount.
