Root Sense UI on Nexus One

Nice video! Amazing work by the people who worked on the ROM.

HOWEVER I don't really like Sense enough for me to trade in my N1.

I installed it last night and i will say i love it, having never used sense prior, i am a big fan. it is also very easy to switch back to ere36 if you dont like it, just have both installed on your SD card and you can recovery back to the old rom. I think sense seems smoother than the sotck android system. I love the widgets that are built into sense and the look of the notification bar is just a lot nicer. i tried going back to home++ but there is no comparison for what i like. obviously to each their own but sense is on my phone for a long while......at least until the next fun toy gets developed

ive been a sense fan for a while now... i was excited that paul was working on a rom for us. that video has only added to the excitement now that the alpha is available. cant wait till 720/3mp/fm radio!

when you install Sense, do you still have the OTA backup feature, like with 2.1? also - is integration with Gmail the same? or is the Gmail app not available with the Sense version? the vid seemed to show there wasn't a Gmail option, but I find that hard to believe...

Not sure what the OTA backup feature is, sorry still new to android. but i can say that gmail is integrated into sense just like stock 2.1. the notice that you replied to this thread was pushed to my phone immediatly as it was prior to installing sense. i am still using the "gmail unread" app on sense and all works fine. If you let me know where to look for the 2.1 backup feature i will let you know. i will say that when i set up the phone on sense, it did import all of my contacts from my google account, all i had to do was download my apps again. i did find that i didnt need as many apps due to a lot of stuff being built into sense, and it really looks a lot cleaner. again, this is still new to me so maybe i will get bored but i did try home++ again and it is no comparison to sense.

in Settings > Privacy, there's a feature called 'Backup my Settings'

the way it works is if you ever have to do a factory reset, or a 'hard' reboot (as defined it the Android world), or even get a replacement handset.... all your apps and most all settings get restored... saves a lot of re-loading and re-setting time...

Yes that is still under the privacy tab to save to sd card. wish i would have known about that earlier

save to sd card? no this allows backing up your setting to the 'cloud'... ie onto google's servers... so when you restore, all apps (free & paid) and settings get restored wirelessly... dont' need sd card... although it won't restore pics/vids an things like that (but those are things that can easily be backed up to a pc...)

that does NOT appear to ba an option. when i go to settings-privacy-back up my data-the only option is to "back up my data" with the only option being sd card. and then "factory data reset"

ok - so it says "back up my data" ?

on 2.1, it clearly says "backup my settings"

on mine - i have it checked - so if i highlight it, it asks "Are you sure you want to stop backing up your settings and erase all copies on Google servers?"

but the is no option to backup data to an sd card...

there's nice how-to on Sense over on Android Central...

The new HTC Sense reviewed: Setting up your Android phone | Android Central

and looks like the backup feature is the exact same, except instead of backing up OTA, it backs up to SD...

So is it somewhat dual boot then? or does it wipe out completely when you switch?

Whats the best way to back up both settings and applications before changing ROM? Especially the applications... do we have to go back into the market and download one by one or is there a way to restore them?

to backup your apps, all you need is the "backup my settings" enabled under Settings>Privacy... although since with Sense, you can't backup OTA, only to SD, not sure how well it would work... since with 2.1 (on Nexus), you backup OTA (not SD, not even an option), but with Sense, you can only backup to SD (OTA not an option)... so an obvious disconnect...

but didn't we say that even if we backup under Settings>Privacy we don't know how to reinstall such backup?

(backing up on SD will make more.... Sense :D)

No idea what you're talking about... I've made use of the online backup twice now (first time was on a replacement Nexus, second time after doing a hard reset). Both times, all my apps and settings restored. No issues.

Do they restore by themselves when you sign into your google account?

I want to use the MUSIC PLAYER which comes with SENSE UI as the default music player on N1 is too simple.

Cheers

Agreed. The stock one blows. But I don't want the Sense UI so I am hoping someone will come up with a better music player. Or even just port over the Sense UI music player.
