newb ? about rooting a phone

Ok was looking at some custom roms and want to know. Do I have to root the phone before I install the rom? Any advice apreciated, tips, etc....

Pending on the ROM, Lets use Darky for example(and my opinion the best ROM)You will need to flash a custom kernel with odin which contains the root,busybox etc and CWM. You wont exactly have to root it, you flash the kernel and its "pre-rooted"
