CPU underclocking or Juice defender?? Merits and proper use for noob

I am sorta new to to android .. I am experiencing crazy low battery life. Moreso than normal.. I am not sure this is a characteristic of my device or if I should be using a market CPU Governor or an app like Juice Defender. I am trying to wring max battery life out of the stock battery. I am considering an aftermarket extennded life (3600mAh) battery, but want to get some ideas from experienced users.

I should mention my device has root access.
Thanks in advance.

Hello, if your phone is overclock you can always lower the cpu and use ondemand for your governor, but keep in mind that if background data is on all the time that cam affect battery life as well as leaving gps on. I normally just turn background data on every few hours or so to synce my contacts and or synce my mail to see if any new mail was recieve, and if you have 4g might want to disable that also if you are not using at that time.

I'm running stock ROM / kernel so no overclock. My backround data and gps, sync, animations are all checked to off. I have installed CPU tuner from the market .. now I need to learn how to use it. Does an app like Juice Defender work the same? And what is the best/easiest to use app for this result?
Thanks

Juice Defender works great, but make sure you set it up for your liking, as it can disable data on it's on and stuff like that. Install the free version and charge your phone all the way to 100% and see how it will affect and save your battery.

From what I'm seeing of CPU Tuner, it's similar to JD, but can tweak CPU speeds.

I'd actually recommend you use System Tuner. It has a bit more detail, but is more effective. It won't shut down your radios, though, like JD and CPU tuner will. System Tuner can let you undervolt, which can be more effective at reducing power consumption. But it takes a lot more care and vigilance. It also has a full suite of CPU controls, a logcat monitor, and a slew of other utilities.

But I think you just have a rogue app eating your power. Have you installed anything recently? You can sort through your logcat to find the problem. System Tuner can filter the log so it's more readable, or you can get any number of apps that monitor app/logcat activity. Or just delete apps you don't use or you may suspect are causing the problem. System Tuner will let you freeze apps if you don't want to delete them.

If you really want to max out your phone, be prepared to spend some time tweaking it and pushing it to it's limits. There is no single app that you can push "Go" and it configures your phone to run 100% effectively. Also, if you really want to maximize performance of your unit and battery, I'd suggest you look into changing your kernel and ROM.
