venting about Google apps

I've noticed Google spends a lot of time updating Google maps, but little to no time updating their other apps. Gmail would be one I would like to update. Here's what I would add or change. A huge company like Google should have the technology to have unread emails show on the icon. I shouldn't have to purchase secondary apps that probably won't work anymore just to show how many emails are unread. Sure, it shows up in the notifications bar or status bar, but I want it on the icon! I know it's small and probably isn't a big deal, but I as a consumer would love to have this. Also, Google+, where is the widget? I'm just saying.

Yeah, maps or the market itself do seem to the be only ones they update on a regular basis. I'm not overly fussed with the notifications (it would be handy), although the ability to change to a darker gmail theme would be nice as it would fit better with the general look of my handset.

I have a G+ widget though. On my phone, I only have the option to post updates from it, where as on my tablet, I can do that and see a few of the posts from my stream.

You should check out the Gmail app on ICS. Its perfect.

I think the google+ app/widget works great, but that's my opinion.

I'm actually not a big fan of the icon alerts (that's very iOS looking).

Also, google+ is available.....and again, you should check it out on ICS (its intergrated perfectly).

I would if I could get ics on my lg optimus v. Grrrr! I've noticed since the last + update the widget is gone. Sure the bugs are fixed but the widget is gone. It took what seemed like years (not really) before they fixed any of the bugs. Just makes me wonder if they test the updates before they release them.

Yeah, in all honestly....until ICS released....I always kinda felt that all previous versions were a bit "beta"

But I can truly say that ICS is a very solid OS and I have very few complaints

I keep hearing this. Personally, I feel Google should make available those options for those who don't have ics on their phones. It's not like Google+ didn't have widget options in the past. Also, gmail shows the number of unread emails on iPhones so why not on Android?

That's iOS native notification system. It has nothing to do with Google.

Google chooses not to place that default in their OS. And I dont blame them. I mean it is useful, but I learn to make it without it.

That's my point, it should be made available for those who choose to use it. Does the stick Android email have this option?

No, the stock app does not.

Its about the default OS. Android does not offer it, simply because it is not built into their native OS.

I understand that iOS does, but thats just another difference between the two.

I've got a notice about updating GMail. Been around for a couple of weeks. I don't see any reason to update. So there is an update available.

If you are rooted, Titanium Backup is very frequent.

I don't use maps, so they don't update automatically.

First , unfortunately since the 2.3.5 update of GMail back in July, Google removed the API for 3rd parties to access unread count. Many icon notification apps don't function with GMail anymore unless you can find a pre 2.3.5 version of GMail. Maybe someday Google will show a little love.

There are a couple of icon notifier apps in the market (GMail Label Notifier & GMail Unread Count). The latter claims to work with post 2.3.5 GMail.

Also, ADW and Go launchers have companion apps for notifications (ADWNotifier and GoNotifier). I know the ADWNotifier still shows unread SMS, missed calls, K9, etc. on their respective icons.

More than likely, another large company, Apple, has a patent on icon notification and Google is avoiding a large lawsuit.
