Help IM on Android

How do I IM on Android (HTC Magic) like with ICQ, Yahoo, and MSN Messenger users? Do IM's on the android count as TXT messages with the wireless cellphone provider?

ie. I am with Rogers in Canada. If I send an IM, as opposed to a SMS TXT message, will I be billed for it, or does it go like a regular IM message?

Thanks!

You can get many different IM apps. I'm using himsn. I'm fairly certain it counts as data usage, not a text. It would have to be an actual Rogers service if it were to count as a text.

Meebo doesn't drain my battery any more than any other IM app left constantly running. I do prefer it's interface to Hi MSN.

Another vote for Meebo.

I use Meebo on my Mac too (web version), so I just have one Meebo account to log into, then it logs me on all the different IM services.

...miss Skype though, had Meebo included Skype (just the IM part), it would have been fantastic.

Do you know if you can be signed on on both PC/Mac and Android using your Meebo account ??
That would be really nice.

Can anyone upload Meebo's apk somewhere? I want to install them but my magic doesn't have access to Android Market. Many thanks.

I dont have it but I took it from the Market on my Roger's Magic...
Paid apps aren't available but Meebo, free, is there.

Something I've noticed about Meebo, it starts when I start my phone (power on) even though I have it set in the option NOT to do so. any ideas?

I've noticed this too, since downloading taskiller. It didn't show up in previous "task switcher/killer" software I had installed. Seems to stop working on it's own, though. A few apps seem to load initially when the phone starts up and then stop running after they've done whatever spying on me that they're doing. :p
