Speed Test: iPhone 3G vs T-mobile G1

Both were measured on their own respective 3G networks. I actually got my phone today and have been playing with it like crazy. My mother and supervisor both have 3g iPhones and I can say the combo of T-MO 3G, Google Android OS, and HTC was a perfect trifecta. I know it's too early to say but it so far as of today seems flawless
 
To be fair, this test wasn't all that accurate. First, something occurred with the iPhone 3G before the connection was established. Something popped up before the connection was even established. That aside, the iPhone 3G was actually done loading at around 26 seconds, not the 30 seconds that they show. They should have stopped it right when the iPhone 3G was done loading, and they allowed 3 to 4 seconds to elapse before they stopped the clock.

Regardless, one network is not the same as the other, and as they said, coverage varies. Also, the phone can make the difference in time, as well. I can tell you, that the difference in speed is actually very little. I have an iPhone 3G, and I get very fast speeds, while a co-worker of mine has a different phone from AT&T, and my iPhone 3G always loads several seconds faster than hers.

I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble, but, the T-Mobile G1 is not an iPhone killer.

The sad thing is, a co-worker of mine got his G1 today, and couldn't even use the thing, because he didn't have a Google G-mail account. When he finally does get it going, he still won't be able to take advantage of the 3G speeds, because T-Mobile doesn't offer 3G in this area, while AT&T does.

I can't wait for him to get the G1 going. Hopefully, it will be working tomorrow. I would still like to play around with it, even though I'm perfectly happy with my iPhone 3G, because I always dig playing around with the latest gadgets!

From your post I hear someone who cry loudly that he didnt make a mistake choosing apple iphone3G.. but my dear friend please wait for some time and you will see what android really is..

The G1 phone is just a phone that will show a small percentage of what will be possible on the android platform.. wait some six months and you are gonna see android even on those cheap phones from china(www.intomobile.com/2007/04/18/another-apple-iphone-clone-from-china.html) (which dont have any brand name) .. and you will see that even those phone will perform better than the iphone ... also you wont say that its an iphone killer because iphone will be already dead..

and thats when you are really gonna cry...

Not going to happen. I have no doubt that the Android software will see great strides. However, the iPhone is not going anywhere, nor will it die because of Android! LOL! That's the funniest thing I've EVER read.

The facts are out there. iPhone has sold much better, and faster, than even Apple expected, people are happy with it, and Apple will only make it better as time goes.

I won't be crying about anything. I'm happy with my iPhone 3G. I'm sure you'll be happy with your G1. That's all good and well. Competition is great. However, I just want to set the record straight. The T-Mobile G1 is NOT the iPhone killer, and never will be. Nor will Android kill it. Just not going to happen.

I think one thing you are missing out on is the fact that the iPHONE 3G had no rivals. That is the ONE reason why it did sell out fast, better than apple expected and whatever. While I don't think the G1 is the iphone killer persay, I do believe it is going to do well, pretty damn well. You also have to remember that TMOBILE doesn't have much 3G towers over the country, but once it does I can see people making the switch.

The one thing I must disagree with is the fact you believe android will not destroy the iphone. That is foolish. There are seriously brilliant undercover people out there. It just takes that one person to make an idea that will completely destroy any competition out there. Just wait, android will pwn the damn iphone.

Um, it had no rivals? Really? I would say that it's had quite a few. Ever since Apple came out with the iPhone, every manufacturer in the world has been putting out touchscreen phones. HTC is just one of them. I do agree, T-Mobile does not have the 3G coverage. I am sure in time, they will improve, but, it will take a great deal of time.

Finally, it is not foolish to believe Android will not destroy the iPhone. It just won't happen. Apple is in this to stay, no matter what happens with Android. Regardless, who is to say that the ONE person making that great idea isn't at Apple? Or, better yet, one of the third parties working on Applications for the App Store?

Trust me, Android will not "pwn the damn iPhone". I am sure that it will become a good operating system, but, Apple doesn't have anything to worry about.

It's not just about the touch screen. It's the package as a whole. obviously the whole reason this phone is hyped up is because it IS a rival for the iphone. And yes I have to agree perhaps a 3rd party developer may be assigned to develope apps for apple. But it's the little developments that an open source will have over apple. Constant refining of a program will be MUCH easier and more efficient on an open source.
 
To add to what I have already said...iphone has a very bad reputation in India and many asian countries... And thats where android based phones will win...

worst of all iphone will die because of its DRM practice...

just imagine of a situation where you want to share a photo (you took or released under cc ) with a friend who sitting next to you ...

With the iphone its pain in the a** when you have to depend on 3g technology to do that...

And the only situation where Apple iphone may not die would be adopting open Google Android OS..
 
I beg to differ. I own both phones and I am switching to Tmobile to use the G1. My iPhone 3G was a great phone, but like all passing devices, is way too hardware dependent. don't get me wrong, I am a Mac power user and own quite a few of the latest MAcs in my recording studio. Software based platforms that run on many hardware platforms don't limit development. BTW, my G1 is definitely faster than my iPhone 3G. Just my thoughts, since I own both phones.
