Root Disable Data Throttle (Carrier)

Do this at your own risk, make a backup first

Wanted to share this info with any TU user who didnt already know

I have tested this both on Stock ROM and Chevan ROM

make sure 3g is off and your on wifi or airplane mode

I used root explorer,but i imagine you can use any root file manager

1-Make a backup of your current build in cwm
2-Open root explorer and change r/o to r/w
3-Navigate to Data/System
4-Inside Data/System you will find a folder labeled Throttle
5-Long press Throttle folder and select permessions
6-Change permissions to Owner: read and execute only, everything els should be unchecked, when finished press ok and go back
7-Open Throttle folder and there should be two items in it if your on stock and three if your on Shevron Rom
8-Make copies of all items in throttle folder wether it be two or three and save them on your pc or a new folder on your sd..That way if something were to go wrong youd have your backup and copies of the files
9-Once you have made copies of the throttle folders contents delete them (wether it be two or three) from throttle folder
10-Back out of Data/System and change r/w back to r/o, exit root explorer and reboot
 
Is there an amount of data that's known to trigger throttling (for Sprint or Boost)? Or maybe this removes a throttle that's always in place?

truthfully bro i couldnt give you a deff. answer, if i had to guess i would say there is a point or a certain amount of data that would trigger the throttle...the internal working of it all i am curious myself...i am sure you would have to really use alot of data in order to be throttled in the first place..how much would be a hard answer to come by, only because boost claims to provide unlimited data
 
I know of a person who worked very high up in sprint. He did give me bits of information here and there (of course, he has to limit what he says). He advised me at the time that they didn't even have the technology in place to throttle customers. All they could do is monitor their usage. That was about a year ago, so if they have come up with a way to throttle users, it is probably not very complex.
 
Do the folders come back after connecting to the network again after they are deleted? I'm wondering if the carrier is able to download throttle specific settings to your device when you use their towers.

nope..the actual throttle folder stays but the contents of it dont return..atleast it hasnt on either of my phones

does this still work? im trying this on the zte warp and it won't let me delete the two files. when i try to delete it, it says Toolbox! what does that mean?

not sure bro..never seen that..cant confirm on a zte..good on prevail and TU though..but if your a serial flasher you will have to do it everytime you flash a rom
 
i have a buddy that uses tether for all his home internet needs. he has received text from boost saying his speed will be cut back after 2.5 gigs a month. will have him try this out and let ya know if he see's a difference.
 
Just trying to understand what this does, think I know but like I've heard a lot 'knowledge is power'. This deletes the file that controls slowing down your surfing speeds when you go over the data limit (example boosts 2.5 gb per month) correct?

In theory but I dont think anyone really knows
 
i deleted all of the files in the throttle folder and they stayed gone. but since have been tethering with both foxfi an pdnet they now have come back.. i deleted them again.. and bam right back. i wonder if pdnet or foxi is creating this file[385551949] path=/data/system/throttle/385551949
 
This is very interesting, I'd like to give it a try but as of now im still scared to use tether because of the message i recieved from boost that im violating terms and condition because im using hotspot on my TU...
