Where to find 2.3.6 for my i9000m

Hey folks,

I have a i9000m which is locked to Bell Canada. When I go into kies the latest android available is 2.3.3. Where can I find 2.3.6 that will work on my locked Bell...

At the link in your sig (STOCK I9000 and I9000M Firmwares and How to guide)

I find it confusing to know which 2.3.6 file(s) to download; there are more than one. Yes, I know Canada is in N.America. I think I need JW1, but faced with two Europe choices, of "download" or "stock" leaves me confused. Any insight is warmly appreciated :).

As far as I know, 2.3.3 KG3 is the latest Gingerbread build for the i9000m. There isn't a 2.3.6 for that model. Also, JW1 is for the i9000 Netherlands so that's not for you.

Yes I know 2.3.3 is latest official Samsung ROM (as of 3/28/12) for N.America. Europe has 2.3.6.

The sammobile firmware page SamMobile Firmware Page isn't clear because it is showing Argentina, Australia & Brazil under N.America (did someone recently move these huge countries?), and no mention of I9000BMCKG3 (2.3.3) for i9000m (Canada) released July 2011, available via Samsung Kies.

I was referring to this link: [Firmwares]Official I9000/I9000M Firmwares collection [Latest: JPJVC, XWJW1, XWJVZ] - xda-developers. Scroll down to 2.3.6 and you might understand my confusion. I've read where one i9000m user put 2.3.6 (Netherlands) on his device with the KG3 modem. I was looking for alternatives. :)

As above, I have seen someone using JW1 on it, but why this one instead of JW4, JVZ etc?

Also, when flashing the PDA, we should use the UGKG3 phone and BMCKG3 CSC files, correct ?

Also wondering if there is any point to updating to 2.3.6? (seems it may fix the wifi connecting issues with 2.3.3)

Here is a thread http://www.sammobile.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2696 that is basically asking the same question as me. And it seems you must flash the three files at once.

Are the versions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881 rooted?

If I want root, should I use the kernel from here?

The post by Black Rose is now old and I believe he successfully resolved the boot-loop and XT9 T9DB directory issues.

After JW1, the boot-up screen will show I9000 not I9000M.

I recently updated to the same arrangement as Black Rose. You are correct: flash the JW1 PDA, and use the UGKG3 phone and BMCKG3 CSC files.

Minutes later I flashed the Semaphore kernel (as PDA), so I can't give a full account of the diff between KG3 and JW1.

JW1 still has the dreaded Samsung 3e Recovery so you can't flash unsigned updates including ClockworkMod (CWM). That is the reason I also updated to the Semaphore kernel which includes CWM.

BE ADVISED: after updating to JW1, your 2-button recovery will be the older 3-button recovery procedure. In other words, Download becomes Vol DOWN + HOME + Power, and Recovery becomes Vol UP + HOME + Power.

While pressing and holding the (Up or Down) Vol + HOME keys, also press Power until the screen logo comes on, then while keeping the Vol + Home keys still pressed, release ONLY the Power button. Once you have entered Download or Recovery mode, you can release the remaining buttons.

Under KG3 it was a 2-button procedure without the HOME key.

Search XDA for JW1 and you will find more answers. A few users tried JW4 and returned to JW1 for stability reasons.

So if I want to use Semaphore as well, it's Semaphore_2.5.0sc.tar that I would need? (2.5.0 is no longer JW1, JVT specific?)

I'm looking to benefit from any improvements from 2.3.3 to 2.3.6, but If I'm not planning to OC, and I don't want bigmem, what can semaphore do for me? I could convert to ext4 file system ? Did you do this, is it faster?

The other features listed at http://www.semaphore.gr don't mean much to me, do they improve performance noticeably?

Also, everyone says to backup before flashing anything, but don't you need root first to do backups? Do you do a backup with CWM or TiBackup? So If I wanted to return to true stock (not rooted), I could always flash the three KG3 files?

Finally, why did you stop at 2.3.6 instead of going for ICS ?

You're welcome.

You have good questions but you need to do more reading. If you don't do the reading yourself you won't have a clear understanding of what you are doing and the advantages/disadvantages of your choices. You really don't have to do anything you don't want to do, as it comes down to personal choice.

Flashing is usually safe but something could (and for some, has gone wrong). Always backup! Performing a backup and, if necessary a restore, takes far less energy, time, and patience, then attempting to re-create your system and data should the need arise. This cannot be over-emphasized regardless of OS.

1) Root your device. 2) Backup all your apps + data with Titanium. And backup all your contacts, etc. also. You can't use CWM with your current Samsung kernel for reasons already mentioned.

Make sure you device has 3-button recovery. If not get it repaired BEFORE flashing; I recall seeing a fix for it on XDA.

Other benefits of Semaphore: Built-in CWM recovery, smoother response without additional lagfix, root (which has to be done again even if you were previously rooted) is accomplished by simply downloading/installing Supersuser from the Market. In this thread there are reports of a problem with JW1: shutting down while wifi enabled causes potential boot loops... A few people mention it there, but no real solution. I'd like to get up to 2.3.6 JW1, but not if it's going to do that.

What I really hope to fix is general wifi connection problems, the looping of "obtaining IP address" message, with no connection.

Also, does JW1 have any of the features of JW4 mentioned here?
