Root Why does anyone like sense?

I love Sense! For the same reasons stated elsewhere. Everything works right out of the box.
I have dabbled with AOSP and I can get my phone set up on a fresh flash within an hour on either Sense or AOSP. I never get a good GPS connection on AOSP

Sense widgets are great! I like the look, and the custom Rosies that guys like TommyTomatoe come up with look fantastic.

They both have a place without a doubt.

For me, Sense bridges the gap between stock Android and Windows Mobile.

As a previous Windows Mobile power user and ROM chef, I found Sense to help fill in the gaps in apps where AOSP lacks certain features (at least without installing additional apps).

Also, as a previous HTC Windows Mobile user, I find Sense familiar, as I used it on previous devices (HTC Fuze, HTC Tilt 2 on AT&T). Sense continues to evolve, and I continue to like using it as I also feel it's pretty ;).

Plus, I think the Digital Flip Clock is a very "throwback" concept, since analog flip clocks are very old school.

I think it just suits some people more than others. I need the additional features that Sense affords me, and I like that I have those features out of the box, without having to install 30 more apps to give me those features and/or widgets, like I'd have to do on AOSP. But I think that's the appeal of AOSP for a lot of people. Since I have to use my phone for work and for play, I need it to have those features, and just plain work when I need it to.

Maybe I just haven't had the time to look into all of the Free apps offered in the Play Store, but it didn't seem possible to have everything without paying for quite a few apps.

But that's just me . . .

i generally like sense, for the reason everything jives with each other. I have just flashed my first aosp ROM, to say I tried..and to be honest, its not that bad. The ONE thing I like that AOSP offers over sense is the lock screen audio controls (dont want to pay for widget locker)..

maybe capthrowback can provide some insight on a sense lockscreen audio control..specifically mikg3.11?!?!?! that is literally the ONLY thing keeping me on aosp right now (pocket casts, pandora, etc).

Most ROMS have the ability to use the volume rocker to increase/decrease volume as well as skip songs. MikG included.

Quick pressing volume up/down adjusts volume
Holding volume up/down skips songs

Is that only for the native music player?

the native music app will play on the lock screen...and I know about the volume rocker to skip tracks..i want something to play/pause and Fast forward. I generally dont use the native music app, but I can put my podcasts into it to make it work like it should...I am talking about an all in one lockscreen widget that works with pandora, pocket casts..etc, just like the one on miui or cm7 does.

I use Google music and it wotks fine with that. I assume it would work with Pandora as well but I don't use it so I can't confirm

Did u just install a new rom? I only ask because of the tapa sig. Whenever I restore, the default tapa sig comes back and I have to go in and disable it.

I'm speaking sense-based ROMS (which I prefer remember). MIUI should have the integrated lockscreen.

Although last night I did flash Tommy's Classic until either the new update for MIUI drops (soon supposedly) or until tommy's supermagic drops (unknown time).

Everyone likes variety :D. MIUI did quench my flashing thirst for about a month though.

Edit to your edit:
No, if I'm on the phone I leave the tapa sig so that I can use that as an excuse for not making sense. :p

thanks rex, Ill look at google music..do you need to put music into the app, or will it detect something is playing? Basically I am getting at the fact that moving podcasts into the right google music folder will get tedious..wonder if and how pandora will work...

i am on miui right now (kinda liking it) and the player on lock screen works for me..i wish they could get that aspect into sense!

I appreciate these comments. A couple things maybe yall can clear up for me: I've always found sense roms to be sluggish on my phone unless I use some sort of tweak scripts. Additionally, I don't like the limited customization I have with sense so I'd always used adw / go as launchers on top when using a sense rom. From what Ive read from y'all, it sounds like if I use adw, for example, on a sense or aosp rom, I shouldn't see much of a performance differnece between a solid aosp and solid sense based rom. Finally, it sounds as though those of you who prefer sense, prefer it for the out of the box qualities it has compared to aosp. Does this all sound correct? I'm mainly interested in how using a launcher (love adw ex now) affects performance on aosp vs sense. AND can anyone comment on my experience with needing to use tweaks on sense roms (and finding I don't need them so much on aosp.)

I've found that ROMS from TommyT or Mik are already so well optimized that adding script tweaks isn't really required.

Once you start to get into the sense 3.0+ range my phone starts to become sluggish so I need scripts to run those (and therefore they don't usually last on my phone).

As for launchers... I stick with stock, but there are lots of customization options with custom ones. Many sense devs are now including optional sense-less ROMS for you to use different launchers with. I would check one of those out.

Right. Ive used a couple senseless roms (SOS n / kwiq ns) but Id like to understand the practical difference between a senseless rom and an aosp rom.

Sense is deeply integrated into the system so I believe most of the deep framework stuff will still be there (hence needing a sense-based kernel). It just gets rid of things like widgets and the launcher to save space and speed up the system.

AOSP ROMS are built from source so they have no sense at all (har-har:D).

I'm sure anyone with more ROM building experience than me will be able to chime in with some more concrete examples.

I think part of the confusion arises from some Sense ROMs being called "Senseless", when really that's not true. They're just Rosie-less, so you can use a different launcher.

But as Rxpert noted, if you find a ROM that's well-optimized, lag isn't an issue. Any ROM that uses a version of Sense newer than what comes stock on the OG EVO will likely have some lag, but Tommy's Classic, for example, has none (in my experience).

I'm not posting this to be a jerk at all. I just starting using/learning about android a few months ago and love it. The og evo is my first device, and I used sense roms for about my first month with the phone. However, after discovering aosp, I really dislike sense, and I don't imagine I would enjoy touchwiz/blur/etc.. either. Anyone care to share their thoughts about why they like sense? I'm not posting to flame those who like sense. I'm just curious.

I haven't read through the pages of posts...but personally...I move around from ROM to ROM weekly, or at least used to. I'll find a really good ROM then a few problems arise and I move quickly to another ROM. Here are my personal pros and cons:

Sense:
pros-stable, reliable, almost all features work, 4G is almost always guaranteed to be here, I've seen faster network speeds on Sense versus AOSP, more friendlier feel, less of a hassle, less bugs, more is known on the software, apparently Sprint doesn't trip if you bring in a phone that has a Sense ROM for most issues (but I always unroot my device before bringing it in for service...even if they only will look at it), more support from developers, etc.

cons-usually ugly lol, doesn't have good kernels mostly because HTC refuses to release code, bad battery life compared to most AOSP ROMs, less uniqueness, too much of that crappy bloatware from HTC and Sprint, usually doesn't have a good wifi hotspot feature but if it has the hacked one, I've seen it run better than AOSP hotspots, most of the times, even developers will have their own bloatware that's hard to get off like my current ROM, Energy, has Facebook built into the ROM so I can't delete it like normally, usually there is no A2SD support, etc.

AOSP:
pros-more unique feel and look, more features usually, less bloatware especially from developers, usually has more of a "vanilla" feel and look (none of that HTC garbage), sometimes has USB/wifi hotspot built into Settings, usually is supported better if the developer(s) actually own the device, usually has A2SD support, etc.

cons-sometimes slower in network speeds, if there are problems, sometimes the problems are really bad like bootloops that make the phone unusable, sometimes support is low because the developer like MIUI works on more than one device, sometimes features are missing like front camera, 4G, HDMI, etc., sometimes key components won't work like the phone or texting making the phone terrible for those that need the phone, etc.

I was on MIUI for a few weeks/months? before switching back to a Sense ROM. MIUI was too slow, didn't have 4G...I just needed something better. Then I started having problems like random bootloops and it was getting on my nerves and touch screen issues, so I moved back to Sense. I liked CM7 but it just had too many major problems for me that I was forced to leave. Other than those major problems, I would've stayed. Things may be different now.

All in all, I'm thinking about going back to the stock ROM but keeping my root status just because each of these ROMs, no matter if they're Sense or AOSP, have some really bad problems that are sometimes impossible to solve and really get to you when you try to show people how cool your phone is. You'll see after using a few more ROMs the differences. And our differences and opinions are usually on a more personal level in regards to look and use. Some people like a simple screen, others like something more vibrant. Some people don't mind not having wifi hotspot while others do. It all depends on you really and what your taste is. When I first started, I loved Sense then after trying an AOSP ROM, I was like you then I turned into who I am today lol it's a fun journey :)

Kind of goes back to what earlymon said about choice. I love android for this community and the choices. I mean, it's 3am and my wife in kids are in bed. I just did some computer work, and when i finished, checked the forum. I love it. i-anything is a far cry from what android offers and I'm willing to try most anything when it comes to it. Y'all enticed me to go back and try some more sense roms too..Smh. :D

I can confirm that the Volume rocker to skip songs works with Pandora. That is one of my favorite features. I love being able to fast forward a song without having to unlock the screen.
I've switched Roms because they didn't have that option.

@ndh777, I think HTC did release the latest Kernel code just recently. Hence why there are a bunch of new Kernels for Sense based GB Roms. Ca1ne has been making a great kernel in SBC and Non SBC flavors. There is a custom line and also a line based off of stock.

For being almost 2 years old still alot of development on the EVO 4G!:D

I don't believe they've released 4.67 code yet. Ca1ne has found a workaround for issues caused by not having code though.(ffc)

Ah, Thanks for the correction. I know they are supposed to at some point. I thought it was.

I just wanted to add to this thread that many of the launcher options work really well with some of the stripped down Sense Roms. I use Launcher7 on Nolimit's Rom and it works great.
And the Xperia arc rom from Diablo is definitely different but it's based off of the 4.67 OTA update from HTC for our phones.
Ssooo many options in the land of Android!

Really? I was really referring to a lack of SBC kernels when I was talking about that lol so there are some SBC kernels? If so, I'd like to try some.

Oh and atljatl, you should also try the various kernels available for each ROM. Some kernels will make you love your phone that much more just because of what extra goodies they can bring to the table. Other kernels may give you a low opinion of a ROM such as many of the kernels that come standard on these ROMs. Try to check out each one to see which is best for you and you might have a more clear feeling about which version of ROM you prefer.

Admittedly, I do want an iPhone but really just for some of the exclusive apps, accessories, and because it's compatible with anything that says iPhone whereas Android compatibility varies from phone to phone. I am starting to see a slow change. It used to be where iPhone got everything first but I heard two commercials yesterday announcing their apps on the Android store and apps coming soon to the Apple App Store lol.

But with rooting, you're so right. This is what ultimately keeps me with Android. All of these great people here on this forum and in the rooting community in general are just so excited about their phones and excited about helping other people that you really can't help but love the process and the feel when you just flashed a new ROM...it's like Christmas time and you're opening a gift not knowing what to expect haha.
