I already have dust under my screen!

As I ordered to the UK I have a two year warranty. The question is could I bear to live without the phone for however long it takes for them to fix :D As I said, can only see it in direct sunlight (which, as a developer, isn't a situation that occurs all too often :D ) so I will see if I can live with it for a while. Unless another bit gets in there. Then it might all be too much (cue dramatic swooning and hand placed delicately across the forehead)

I got mine last Friday and I now have a single speck of dust on the right hand side of my display in the center near the edge.

It seems to be stuck on the underside of the glass, not the LCD. Its not enough to ruin my phone. My old iPhone 3g was full of dust when I sold it.

Ill keep an eye out if too much gets under there.

Well, there are a handfull of phones that are 99% dust-free. iPhone 1Gen has it's LCD glued to the digitizer (glass), thus making it almost impossible for dust to get in. However the 3G and 3Gs LCD and digitizer is not glued togehter (cheaper construction), and dust will eventually get in under the glass. The only other phone I know that has a LCD glued to the digitizer is the HTC HD2 (lucky me). :)

Bingo. The first thing you see when googling up "dust under screen" is... posts about iPhones having dust under their screens. I understand some BBs have this problem, too.

I'll do it when it gets back, I sent it in after a month, I had a LOT of dust under there. It started with one speck, then two, then four, then twenty five and so -on.

I heard of a lot of people getting refurbs with the dust issue again. I had mine engraved so I am having it actually "repaired". I'll wait till it gets back, wait about a month, and if I get dust again and have to send it back again--I will definitely glue gun the edges of the damn screen (after they repair it for the second time and send it back to me)

From the first BB Bold and on no BB's have dust under the screen because of no gap between the LCD and the protective screen. iPhones do get dust under the screen but it's not as severe as N1. Most of my nokias had dust...i8910 didn't and so is my milestone.

Wow.. dust under the screen is this much of a problem? I really really want to get the N1.. was planning on ordering it tonight or tomorrow. I'm paying full price for this phone since I'm already on t-mobile with a contract.

So do I chance it?? If i do order it, gonna check for dust first and check to see if the screen crackles when i press on the edges. And if it does crackle, then I will do the hair dryer method!!

Also.. how do they ship it in the USA?? And typically how long does it take?

I wouldn't do the crackle test. Something tells me people are just pressing unusually hard on the edges of the screen and making it do this.

Dust is only a problem on about 40% of the N1s it seems, and if your willing to keep it in the Hello Kitty looking pouch than I don't think it would be an issue at all (I had not one speck of dust until I bought a case and stopped carrying the black pouch).

They shipped it to me in 2 business days I think -- and I ordered it late in the day with engraving, so it might be true next day if you don't get it engraved and order it in the morning.

EDIT: Still waiting on my N1 to be "repaired" and sent back to me. I used to be able to check status - which always just said "your phone as been received" but now when I try to check status it just takes me to the page on HTC with the phone numbers to call for support. Maybe they realized that all the check status ever reported was that "your phone has been received".

Hmm.

A "glue-"gun won't work. Think about it, there are plenty of places on the the device where dust can enter. For example the earplugs jacket, the usb-port, the speaker and so on. Dust will get in there and get in inside the phone, and later in under the glass, no matter what you do.

The way I see it, live with the issue. No phone is perfect. :)

That's a bit strange isn't it?
Even that cheap crap as my LG viewty (KU990i - cheapest version) doesn't have that issue. However I already ordered my N1 (should came to me today) and i just noticed that thread :|
Does HTC always sucessfully repair these phones? I mean if I get dust I don't want to send this fhone over and over again.
If I would notice this thread before I would probably buy MOTO molestone (better looking imo and no dust problms) even if it's slower, but I'll see :)

We don't really know the size of the issue. Only the people who have seen this will get on the forum and jump up and down about it.

My N1 has no dust.

Don't let it put you off.

And you get this information from where?

Hmm indeed.

From nowhere. There are no official statistics on the number of N1's with the dust issue whatsoever.

At the very most, I'd say the percentage is something like ~20% going by online forums, but even then you have to keep in mind that online forum-goers represent a limited sample of anything, and people who have problems will be louder and angrier than those who don't.

Personal experience.

I said "it seems", just a personal observation from all the posts and polls I've found regarding the dust issue. It's a guess not a controlled lab test.

On any note, I got my N1 back in 4 days, I thought it'd take 2-weeks, I'm glad it didn't I was getting anxious.

I was dust-free for the first 5 days, now its starting again near the bottom just like before - I assume it will work its way further inside, and multiply and drive me nuts again.

But it's still under warranty so I'll wait maybe a month or two before sending it back in. I'm sure they'll realize what it is eventually and hopefully can seal it or correctly place the glass in there.

It's on record that they repaired it once under warranty so I'm hoping this will help my future cases rather than hurt.

no, i've called four more times and four more supervisors confirmed-- i will be getting a full kit. a brand new box. but they said there's a fking problem with fedex receiving the shipping info so fedex hasn't shipped my product out yet. really just sounds like they're pushing the blame onto fedex and that's supposed to make me feel better.

i have no idea when i will receive a replacement phone. i won't even be present at their shipping address since i'm moving. i really thought i would be able to get this done before i moved, since shipping time was supposed to be two day air.

EDIT: i didn't get a full kit. i was lied to 4 times.
do you have to send your phone back before they send you a replacement?

i know with t-mobiles phones they let you return it in the box they send to you, that way you aren't without a phone.

One month on and no dust, no broken screen... none of the 'issues' that supposedly plague the N1.

I wouldn't air quote issues likes that, as I would hope you're not trivializing an issue multiple people (including myself) are experiencing with their units and you're just letting everyone know you haven't experienced issues (yet).

I'm sure most people who've reported this phenomenon baby their phones like I do, and find it quite frustrating that even when a delicate touch is applied, it still reproduces issues. I experienced similar things with iPhones i've previously owned and in the past and my local store acknowledged this errors and swapped the units out with 'dust free' units. The challenge with most people is the fact they have to mail in their units and put holds on their accounts until the swap is complete, something that frustrates a lot of people (AppleCare requires the same thing if you're using their mail-in service, btw.)

All I can say is 'count your blessings one by one.'

no dust here as of yet...

to the dust people, are you pocketing your Nexus?

I have using the neoprene sleeve since day 1 to carry it around... no problems yet (and no broken screen either obviously)...

imo, dust and broken screen are a non issue if you actually use the sleeve... i'm thinking most don't

once i stopped using the sleeve is when the dust got in. i sent it in for repairs and it only took a week or two for dust to reenter.
I wouldnt mind the sleeve if it didnt look like hello kitty and muffle my notifications

I have had my Nexus One for a month and have no dust under the screen. ::knocksonwood::

The outside case is usually covered in dust and sometimes cat hair.

When I owned the Eris for a few days, I had a small red hair from one of my shirts show up underneath the screen...

Hopefully HTC has fixed this problem (one can hope).

P.S. No neoprene sleeve usage here, and the phone's in my pocket most of the time.
