Wifi router 'responsiveness' - Delayed notifications

dremits

Lurker
Hello all,

I've been experiencing an issue wherein when my phone is connected to the wifi router in my flat (router A), notifications (email, fb messages, delayed installation of apps installed from the Market desktop app etc.) are delayed (usually by several hours). I thought this would most likely be an issue with the handset however when connected to my router at my other home (router B) these notifications arrive pretty much instantly which has led me to conclude it must be a matter of router configuration. So my question is what settings could be different that may cause this issue?

I should perhaps also mention that internet browsing on the device whilst connected to said troubling router (router a) is temperamental. Often I have to turn wifi off and on in the handset settings to fix it temporarily.

Device: HTC Desire HD
Router A: Netgear Wireless N DGN1000
Router B: D-Link DSL 2680

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,

PS: This is my first post, so greetings!

Welcome to AF!

I have something similar happen at work, but it seems to be caused by a firewall/port forwarding issue.

Push notifications don't work at all while I am at work on their Wifi, but when I get home (or on 3G) everything works as it should. Check if there is a firewall or port forwarding active on the router or somewhere else on the network.

Let us know!

Hey stigy,

Thanks for your reply. I've certainly not set any port forwarding and any firewall settings will be factory set, no alteration by me. When I get back to my flat in a few days i'll see if there's an option do disable any firewall at least for diagnostic purposes.

Thanks again,

Have updated what the troubling router is (Netgear DGN1000). There was a firmware update available for the router so I updated but it doesn't seemed to have solved the issue. I should note that notifications come through when I turn on the screen of my handset. It's just irritating that I can't rely on the phone receiving notifications whilst idle. Having checked the router settings, I can't determine what the problem is; firewall settings on default, no port forwarding. Any other methods of diagnosis welcome!

Thanks.

EDIT: I've noticed something curious: When in my router's 'Attached Devices' page on the web admin, my android is listen ONLY when the screen is on and the device isn't idle. When the screen is off and the device is left idle, a refresh of the 'Attached Devices' page and the device is no longer listed. This may imply an issue with the Android device, but this issue isn't encountered on the other DSL router, with no alteration of the Android's config. What does this mean!?

Check the settings, as it seems like you've got Wi-Fi set to turn off when the phone is in standby.

You can have it stay on all the time, or when on power, or off on standby.

Has anyone figured this out? I have a Belkin N300 router....same problems....it has been driving me crazy....wifi sleep is set to never. When i use other routers all my data is instant. All my data is delayed. Must be a router setting....disabled firewall in router...qos settings disabled too. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Is your router's firmware up to date?

Have you tried a different router in your home?

Those are the two things I can think of to try before we investigate further.

Yes...my old router worked fine....firmware is up to date....just spend 45 mins on chat with belkin ....nothing settled....ive tweaked just about all the settings i know....factory reset it 4 times....nothing. When i go to my kids house....all the phones work fine....and its always when the phones are "idle"...seems like the data hangs in the router....just tested on 2 phones with ebuddyxms...took 15 mins on one and 12 on another....other routers....instant

Any other suggestions? I'm out of things to try lol

Just posted this on another forum, so thought I'd chuck it in here too.

Yea I had this drama as well. Turned out it is was my router firewall (Netgear D6300). Both of my Androids had the issue (SGS2 & 3). So I reserved their IP addresses, added one to a DMZ and the other I opened all incoming ports via the Firewall (did it this way because you can only have one IP/device per rule). Problem solved, notifications received in real time. Another solution is to open the NAT - which effectively opens all the ports up.
