Anyone fancy trying this at home?

Believe it or not, Sand will still scratch it.

Indeed. And here's why:

Mohs scale of mineral hardness - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Some particles of quartz and other hard minerals in the sand would still be able to scratch the screen, hardened glass or not (glass is 6 on the scale). Iron and steel are lower on the scale, so they are "softer" than glass, hence why the nails don't do any damage.

Even "dust" can damage the screen: dust is a collection of tiny particles of a bit of everything, and that may include small fragments of hard minerals too...

Wonder if the Russians can try hitting a diamond with the phone ? :p
