Help I just upgraded to ICS pushed out by verizon - it froze while updating applications,

and when powering off (power button + volume down for 10 seconds) and rebooting, all seemed well. It claimed the upgrade was successful...

I did notice my total apps went from 98 to 97. Maybe Verizon removed one of its own apps...

When I noted the phone being frozen, it was very warm to the touch.

I've the extended warranty - should I use it and get a replacement? Some screens, like the 'battery' screen don't show a full complement of detail. Just one long horizontal bar that has a vertical black section going through it. Maybe I have to wait a while to see it populate with stats, but it doesn't look right...

Otherwise everything is much faster, which is a plus, but the freeze combined with this one issue make me fear there's more to come...

Is there anything I should look out for, and given the freeze should I exchange the phone?

Thx!

What did the screen look like when it froze? I assume you didn't have any screen issues prior to this. Also could you tell us the android version number? Thx

Thanks for asking!

I recall the black screen with rectangle in the middle with "updating applications" and the little groovy circle that's supposed to be animated. The animation had stopped. The process had been running for 45 minutes and the phone was very warm to the touch...

Even after rebooting and doing brief testing a few minutes ago (the battery life screen no longer concerns me BTW), the phone was still warm to the touch. Not as much as when it had locked up, of course. Of course, I had it plugged in all AM while the upgrade ran, and during the upgrade it's clear the install ran via battery, going from 38 to 31%.

2.6.35 was the old ver

The new one is what Verizon is pushing out (4.04?)

The phone did lock up a couple of times in the past, usually when playing HexDefense or an Amiga emulator and the phone was warm, but 2 incidents over 4 months is nothing... or so I thought. This is the third incident. (I did do a reboot last night as well, to ensure a cleaner install...)

fwiw in the future i wouldn't do OTA updates with it plugged in.

I know what version they pushed out but i need you to actually verify that indeed happened on your phone.

Go to settings/about phone/ and it should be around there. Additionally if Moto didn't steal the screenshot feature of ICS out of it, you could try Holding Pwr and Volume down quickly to take a screenshot and then post it here. A screen shot of your "about phone" info.

If you were part of the Motorola Feedback Network you might want to report it to them. Last I heard they were still planning to do a SOAK test before releasing the upgrade. Assuming that this is the case then I'm thinking that the update has not been officially released quite yet.

The last 2 days I kept looking for system updates (settings->about->updates). Nothing showed up until today -- from what I'd read, SOAK happened earlier this week and general distribution started on Friday. I got my notice this AM. Probably as I bought the phone on the first day it was available for sale...

I've found other bugs as well - the media service drains battery life - every restart has the media service re-starting and sucking the life out of the battery (and my patience).

More amusingly, the unlock PIN is useless since the new feature of accessing the phone from the lock screen then exiting that does an end-run around the entire security subsystem. This is upsetting, not that I'm unhappy or anything...

Motorola was slow in getting this out, so I was expecting something more solid.

I wonder if ICS can be removed, otherwise I will use my extended warranty and get a replacement using the 2.35.6 Gingerbread...

My next door neighbor come over this morning saying he woke up to a message on his phone saying the update was ready for download so he did it and showed me his new ICS screen. 7 hours have passed since he came over and I did not recieve it yet or any message about getting it like he got about 3 days ago

If you do a factory reset, all should be fine. I had problems after the update too, but starting fresh fixed all my issues.

This update seems too much of a change to install over a bunch of apps.

Noticeably better than Gingerbread.

Cool.

I might bite the bullet and try it.

I'm doing a full backup of the internal drive now.

I hope the battery issue is resolved... if that's all that's required I'll happily start fresh... it just died, and I had the thing on airplane mode (which reminds me, I need to find new shortcuts for the main screen to enable/disable airplane mode...)

Oh, did you do the backup to google servers re: your local data before the factory reset? Or were you worried residual settings would be restored that would cause the problem to return?

I know the apps you purchase are linked to your Google account so you won't ever lose those, but when you do a factory reset, does it automatically install all the apps you previously had? Or do you pick and choose what you want from what was installed before>

There is an option if you want to restore your settings and account (as soon as you enter your Google account info), which includes the apps. It in theory installs all apps, put I find it does not (which is fine). It also recovers your wifi passwords. Handy IMO. You can always uninstall apps you do not want.

I received the update notice this morning at about 1:00AM. It went smoothly but now Launcher Pro no longer works, reminding me that Blur really sucks.

I had to re-enter my wifi password. :(

With luck it will push out my existing paid apps; I can handle the free ones...

But, yeah, a full hardware reset has fixed the battery drain problem to be sure... or, rather, the battery status screen no longer shows 'media', or anything else, even coming close to 'display' as the #1 usage of the battery... so I think things are on the up and up...

Now that Blur is accelerated using the GPU, and more efficient OS, I am fine with it. Silky smooth and I and am picky.

Did you get the OTA or soak?

If you're wondering whether the formal end-user rollout has started, I can confirm that it has. I received my notification that an update was coming soon late Friday night, and when I checked for updates Saturday morning, I had the option to download and install ICS.

Unfortunately, my update failed due to some removed system apps, but I wiped and reinstalled GB .181 and was then able to update to ICS.

I'm not now, nor ever have been a SOAK test member. It appears as though Verizon is rolling this out in a phased approach.

Go Launcher works.

I actually prefer Blur now- it is accelerated and has some nice features that Launcher does not have, since developed pre ICS. Blur on ICS is just as fast as LP. This was NOT the case with GB on the Razr. Blur was IMO a laggy mess with GB.

The soak test actually included random people that never signed up with MFN. My guess is that was an attempt to make sure that Q2 was met for sure just in case something didn'y go quite right. Moto has never missed a projected release time frame.
