ICS: Tips and Tricks

A few tips and tricks for ICS in general:

1 - While using the browser, press and hold on the back arrow to get your history/bookmarks/saved pages.

2 - Under Settings > Developer options you can adjust the animation for windows and transitions

3 - Under Settings > Developer options you can adjust the number of processes allowed to run in the background

4 - Pulling down the notification panel gives you quick access to settings via the little gear icon.

5 - You can delete apps without going into settings or the market. Go to the app list and select an app and long press it (the same way you would to add it to a home screen). If you drag it all the way to the top of the screen there is an option to uninstall it.

6 - To display specific contacts in People open the app and hit settings > Contacts to display. From there you can select a specific synced account or select customize to tweak things a bit further. Selecting Customize and your Google account will allow you to block some of the unwanted content people tend to get.

7 - Settings > Language & input > Settings (next to Android Keyboard). This will allow you turn on/off sounds, vibrate and pop ups. It will also let you adjust the level of auto correct.

8 - Getting more than one notification for gmail. Go to gmail > Menu > Settings > Email account > Ringtone & Vibrate and check or uncheck Notify Once.

Weird - I follow your instructions exactly but after I click on app info the next screen has buttons for "Force stop", "Uninstall updates", "Clear data" and "Share", nothing to disable.

I have found that when your only options are the ones you listed you must "uninstall updates"....after that is done you go back to it and you will have the option to disable that app.

Not sure if this has been brought up, but wondering if it's possible to do this. In Gingerbread if you held down your finger on the home screen it gave you the option to add programs, widgets, shortcuts, etc. In ICS if you hold down your finger on the home screen it brings up the option to change the wallpaper. Anyone know if it is possible to add the Gingerbread options instead of just adding wallpaper? Biggest pet peeve so far, other than that so far so good!

In GB for my corporate email account I was able to select individual days of the week to sync my email. I only work Mon, Wed and Thurs so those are the only days that I want my corp email account to sync. I would love to be able to do this in the stock mail app but if someone has a free app that sync's email and calendar, I am all ears.

Thanks in advance!
Erik

System button from homescreen and then manage apps...then when you click on an app from there if will give you the option to disable.

Still don't see how to do this.

For instance, MOG app. I don't want this showing. Used to be able to long press, and a hide option would show.

If I go into apps, I get what is quoted above, nothing to disable. If I do unistall updates, it says it will return this to factory. That doesn't work.

There must be a simple way for these not to show in my apps. Too much bloatware, that I don't mind them putting there, but do mind showing. I like my app drawer neat;-)

Once you uninstall updates the option to disable will be there. You may need to restart the phone if it isn't showing up.

The only two that I have had trouble disabling have been Device Setup and Guided Tours.

is there a way to do a charge only option when connecting your phone to your pc via usb?

I read that people didn't have this option during the leaks, but I didn't think it wouldn't be availbe with the full install. I understand that regardless of the options that youre left with it charges nonetheless, but I'd like to just charge the phone and still have the ext memory accessed.

I have been a long time fan of launcher pro. But i do agree with you. I am currently experimenting with Go Launcher. I wish that i did not have to use a home replacement but to my knowledge there is no other way to apply themes.

Check out Nova Launcher ... 10x better than LauncherPro IMO

Press apps at the bottom, then at the top you will see widgets in the middle, scroll through these, hard press what you want to add

Ever since ICS loaded on my phone, my contact favorites on my home page has numerous duplicates of people. I have searched and searched how to correct this problem. Used to be you had a certain number of contacts on your phones home page, now I have 45 people and most are duplicates. Anybody have any idea how to fix this?

I don't know if I just didn't notice this before ICS, but it became aparent today. I use navigation a lot especially since I just moved to a new area. I've always been mildly annoyed by the robot voiced turn by turn instructions and I'm sure it was there as recently as last week, but today I heard a pleasantly natural female voice guiding me on my drive. I don't recal reading that this was an ICS improvement, but there she is.

Some nav trick I stumbled upon:
You can change the voice/language of the "person" giving directions:
Settings> Language & Input> Text-to-Speech Output> Google Text-to-Speech> hit the "gear"> Language> Select your preference

To adjust the speed of speech:
Settings>Language & Output> Text-to-Speech Output> Speech Rate

You can then select "Listen to an example" to check out what your new setting is before exiting and hearing something funky.

Open Contacts>Menu>Contacts to display> make your choices. (I had lots of them in the Verizon Backup, so I exported them to Google and no longer display anything from Verizon. I also disabled Backup Asst and it's not even an option anymore. Google is my default for all new ones now)

I am also confused ..."Disable built-in app?" "If you disable a built-in app, other apps may misbehave"

What kind of gamble am I taking about affecting other apps?

You're not taking any gambles. They just say that for CYA purposes. I haven't had any issues with other apps...yet. ;)

That would depend on what apps you are using. If you don't use any of the Verizon stuff then it isn't too much of a gamble. If you do then you may want to leave them alone.

Well just discovered built in folders for apps.. but not in the app drawer. When on any of your dedicated screens you can drag an app on top of another one and create a folder works in the app dock as well.

I was also shown that with 2.3 I was able to make groups in the app drawer.. If they would let me organize the apps in the order I want now, I would love the os 100%

I also like the way you are able to hold the home button and you can stop those apps by swiping the app you wish to stop.

I'm surprised I haven't seen any cries of copying Apple yet. ;) (not in this board, but on some of the other smartphone sites, FB pages, etc)

I must be doing something wrong because I can't seem to export the VZW contacts; I would like to have all my contacts in Google.. Thx

haha yea soon apple will probably be crying ;)

but it is something I'd really like to see, because the carrier likes to put so many apps on the phone and then make it so you can't uninstall them... I have 16 apps that I don't want that just take up space, I wish I could at the very least organize them how I want. Right now I use the groups option, but its still not in the order I want them in.. I can be picky haha

Funny. I've been using Go Launcher for over a year, but now I'm completely stock. This version of Blur is Moto's best work to date, imo. The only thing I miss from GL is the scrollable dock.

agree. The only thing I miss is adding additional screens.

I too dropped Go Launcher...I do miss some of the customization especially in the app drawer, but the new blur is nice. I cannot let go of Dolphin Browser yet though...

In the app drawer just click on all apps in the top left corner and click new group.
