Long press the text box, and press Input method, see if you can find built-in keyboard. If not reboot it.

To clarify your problem, when you have the cursor in the text box (and your slider is open exposing the keyboard) and you type in the text box using the hard keyboard, it doesn't input text? Make sure that you tap the text box (placing a text cursor in it) before typing.
