Root [International] Android noob - root questions and advice?

Hey all. I'm new to android and have a few questions about rooting my phone.

I'm basically looking for a stock ics experience for my phone. I originally wanted the galaxy nexus, but everywhere in the uk seems to have discontinued it in lieu of the s3. Is this possible through rooting?

also, I am very keen to get the jellybean update as soon as possible, mostly for the google now feature. I have read that it is due to be officially available for the s3 in Q4, will rooting enable me to get it faster, or possibly cause me to get it later as i wont be able to get it ota from samsung?

lastly, how simple is it to return to "factory settings" for a o2 s3 in the uk.

Yes, you look for AOSP, AOKP or CM9 roms. CM10 will likely be the first jellybean ROM for S3.

Of course doing this means you miss loads of cool Samsung only features.

I would suggest a 3rd party launcher plus theme if its just the stock "LOOK" that you want.

Also if you run an AOSP ICS rom on your S3 won't you get those horrible on-screen back, home, and menu buttons wasting screen real estate? I don't want buttons on my screen when I've got physical ones on my phone.

That's why I'll probably wait for Samsung to release their proprietary Jelly Bean OS, as it will be designed specifically for the hardware.

EDIT: I was thinking of the Jelly Bean port from GNexus to the S3, which has the onscreen buttons:
