So much for scratch resistant gorilla glass 2

I feel for you, I dropped my OG evo from about a foot off the ground and it landed completely flat on my hard wood floors and shattered.

I had it only a few weeks so I know how you feel. I would put a screen protector on it now and you wont even see or feel the scratch once you do.

Funny how tech firms go on about the glass and make it sound indestructible when of course it isn't. Must be a cost issue I guess, but my watch has Sapphire Glass and that really is tough. Dread to think the number of times it's hit walls, doors etc etc and left a dent in the wall rather than a scratch on the glass! Admittedly smaller, thicker and not touch-sensitive... but after 10 years it's still scratch free (touch wood!)

Its awful when we make a mistake and drop something like this. We all do it and its just part of how life can suck!!!

Having written that may I write that I have read some true horror stories about the dropping of phones, net books and tablets. What never ceases to amaze me is the LACK of damage incurred by some of the accidents.

When we look at the S111 it is so thin and plasticky (flimsy to save weight!?) that to drop it I would have thought would have caused an awful lot more damage.

Let me write a little about the screen. Gorilla glass is not a licence to abuse our phones. Gorrilla glass 11 is not harder its just thinner.
The only known glass that can be truly called scratch resistent is sapphire glass. Sapphire glass can only be scratched by a diamond, its found on top end watches. It costs a fortune.
Sapphire galss is rated on the Mohl scale as 9 where diamond is 10 and talc is 1
For a phone manufacturer to use a sapphire glass of the dimentions needed would cost thousands, thus making such a proposition absurd.

It appears we have to rightly accept that mobile phones and other such techno' is not drop proof in any sense of the word. The SGS111 is a fragile piece of technology and should be respected as such. Accidents will and do happen the only way of ensuring against a disaster would be insurance.

I fear the thinner and more micro we go with such devices the more fragile they will become. It is the 'price' we pay for aesthetics and miniturisation.

Gorrila glass is not a licence to abuse the screen in any way. A good srtong supporting case and screen saver should be purchased the same time as the phone. This again is no licence to drop the phone.

Though I am truly sorry for the PO things could have been so much worse.

Indeed. The price of the sapphire crystal on our watches can be between 20% and 40% the total cost of the watch! Imagine that cost on a large 4.3" screen:confused:

Ouch...... Depending on the angle any given glass is struck, most glass will shatter or crack etc. No screen protector can prevent this.

Sorry to learn of your misfortune.

I have S3 a few weeks and there is a little scratch on it.
Its no big deal, but it wasn't dropped or anything.

I had an S2 for 12 months that got awful abuse. The edges of the phone look bad and it fell lots of times but not a single mark on the screen.

Its not a complaint just an observation but Id say the screen isnt as scratch resistant as the S2.

Its on a par with the Google Nexus I had before the S2.

Actually Ive since changed my mind.
I think the glass is worse than the nexus.
Small scratches are appearing on a few areas on the screen.

I looked at 4 different S2s that had really rough treatment and not a mark of any sort on them even though most of the cases had several dents.
No protectors on them either.

Like at least 2 other posters in this thread, my DX has dropped MANY times and has numerous dings all over the case. Not only has the phone held up beautifully to all of these drops, the screen is still in perfect condition. I never cared to have a case or screen protector on the thing.

What did I purchase when I preordered a GSIII? A case. After I received my first one and it had 2 minor scratches on the screen, I purchased a screen protector and had the phone exchanged.

My SIII has a few scratches too after 2 months of use, my SII has none after 1 year of the same kind of use, they can all be seen and felt if you run you fingernal over them.
Not impressed with the Gorilla glass quality on the SIII :(

I have no scratches on mine for now but just in case got a zagg screen protector just cost a little more but insurances me I won't have it all scratched up when my cousins get hold of it and play with it. (Not to careful and previously scratched up my note)

My DX was naked 2 years. Had dozens off falls including falls and slides 5 or 6 feet along concrete face down. Amazingly, the DX screen to this day is completely free of scratches or imperfections of any kind. No case and no screen protector.

I think people need to understand that scratches like this come from a particular set of circumstances in which a substance harder than the glass comes in to contact with the screen. In past cases, you might not have ever come in to contact with such a substance in two years. In this case? Maybe you did after the first week. It isn't that one screen "lasts" longer than the other, because this isn't a matter of the glass wearing out over time. Someone mentioned a particle of sand in this thread or another which is a perfect example. Day 1 or day 100, the wrong bit of sand will leave scratches on your screen.

Personally, I'm okay with the material put on this screen and trust that it is as resilient as the Evo 3D that it replaced. I doubt I will use a screen protector, but fully accept the fact that I may have a hairline scratch or two in a year (like with my Evo 3D).

No doubt the DX is one of the best built phone ever. That thing is built like a tank.

I'd get a small scratch on the screen, so I know it can be scratched. I was without a screen protector too for a long time and didn't get any further scratches.

I never had a case on it and dropped it at least a couple of times while out biking and I know it did some sliding/flipping on the concrete. It's got some scratches and stuff on around the bezel, but no structural damage and screen was just fine.

Just from holding the GS3, I'm not sure it would have survived in the same way.

Sorry to hear that's why I always leave the store with a screen protector and case when I get a new device.

Going to pick up my screen protector today too.
On to the Moto Droid, that thing took a beating for sure and never cracked.
Like I said, it is all my fault anyways, just needed to vent a little bit lol.

I dropped my droid around and treated it like a dumbphone and nothing. That was a tough phone. That was one of the things I missed when I got rid of the droid- I knew I could just use the phone and whatever happened, happened. No cases, no worrying about dropping it. It was sweet.
