Media scanner will not scan external SD card

A few weeks ago the media scanner on my Galaxy S stopped recognising music files on my 16GB external sd card, meaning that these files were no longer appearing in the stock music player or Winamp. They are however available if I access them directly from the card and open them with "Soundplayer", so the files themselves are OK. Now the same has started happening with image files. These are now longer available in the gallery, but can be accessed direct from the card. I've tried unmounting and remounting the card, but this makes no difference. Any suggestions as to what the problem might be?

Media Scanner in SGS will not scan any folder if that folder contains a file named ".nomedia" (without quotes, of course)

Check if your desired folders contain any such file. If yes, delete this file and Media Scanner will include those folders in the gallery.

Can you afford a factory reset ? I mean all your contacts, sms, call logs, installed programs will be gone.

Does it happen only on the files which are on external SD card ?

*That fixed my music problem!*

I'd been puzzled / vexed / cursed that the 27GB of music on my external card was invisible to most Android music players. I knew it had to be Media Scanner-related since nearly all of them rely on the scanned database, and this problem persisted across so many players. (And could be solved by using something like PowerAmp, that allows you to specify where you store your music, and it does its own scan).

My ext card had a .nomedia folder in its root. Deleting that, and deleting the Media Scanner database so it could be rebuilt, solved this issue for me.

Sorry for the (partial) hijack, but I was excited. :) I read this, figured it might affect my mp3 files issue...and, it did.

Thanks!

I nearly rebooted my phone to factory settings as my 16 gb internal memory would not show the videos and music stored in it. Immediately after deleting the nomedia file it showed in my music and video player which saved me a ton of time and energy.
Thanks for the info.
Wonder why Samsung's user manual does not talk about such stuff.
Thanks a ton
