Backlight/screen timeout not working

Hi,

For the first two weeks it was fine. And now i face an issue with the screen timeout..The display gets dim but its not turning off..I checked with most of the apps and various settings...but nothing worked out..if i press down the power button,it goes to sleep..otherwise it just stays and drains my battery...please help me out. Also i went through the other post regarding this issue..nothing seems to fit my issue exactly and i even tried the suggestions from web like searching for the bad app, playing with default settings....no go...::::)))))))please help...!!!!!

This started happening to me as well, the screen just stays on. So I turned off Smart Stay and now it times out just fine. Smart Stay is really cool but I've been using android phones for a couple years without it now so I don't really care. Try turning it off and see what happens. If it's already off, try changing your screen time out to different settings then back again, see if that resets it.

Hi ..Thanks for the reply.,..but my issue seems to be little different...When the phone is not connected to charger or usb connecter,it times out correctly...but when you connect the charger,it lights up and just stays forever..I need to use the lock button to turn it off..As am using the flip cover, sometimes i forget to lock it..so it stays on and when i touch it after sometime, its boiling....so i dunno what might be wrong..everything is perfect and i have customised it day and night ..Factory reset sucks big time..:(..any suggestions....by the way i turned of motion and smart stay and all the extra feautures..but no luck:(

Sounds like a setting in the debugging menu. There is an option to keep the screen when connected to a charging source. It's used to keep the screen on when people are flashing roms and trying to root their phones. I would check there to see if the option is checked.

I was facing the same issue. I changed the settings as in turned on smart stay, change timeout time, auto screen brightness etc. exited the display settings Then I switched them all off and rebooted. My timeout started back.

I think i figured it out. I had a drive link sideloaded. It seemed to be keeping the screen on.

I thing you may find you have your phone set to "stay lit" this is an option where, while you are looking at the screen it will stay active, I had this problem and unchecked this option, now my battery lasts much longer too... Valent G.

I had this very same problem and eventually found out that it was caused by an app called Notifier Pro. Once uninstalled, the problem was solved. What was really confusing is that despite the screen timeout on the app being set to the desired value, it used to default back to 30s every single time the screen was locked. Incredibly frustrating.

Hi All! I see this thread goes back a rather long way, however I'll give this a go. I recently got my young cousin a refurbished phone (Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini). The issue is whenever she locks her screen the backlight keeps coming on, constantly. I have literally sat on forums for the last 3 hours trying absolutely everything. I've installed EVERY wakelock detector there is, tried the push ad blocker, installed battery saving apps, changed the brightness settings, made sure the face/motion detectors are off etc etc. Nothing is working. Like at all. Not even remotely. I have factory reset the phone twice as well. Still nothing. It's driving me insane that I can't work out the issue; usually there's nothing Google can't get me through! Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

I also had this problem with my Samsung Note 4 on Android 6.0.1. I found the answer which worked for me.
I had always used a lock screen timeout of 1 minute. Well, my lock screen light never timed out, it would remain on until the battery eventually died. I would often feel a hot phone in my pocket, on inspection it was because a notification had lit up the lock screen, and it wouldn't time out.
It appears there is a problem with Android - if you set the screen timeout to 1 minute or longer timeout, then it never times out. The solution is to use either the 15 second or 30 second screen timeout. Mine turns off now at 30 seconds. Pity Android has this problem.

I'm having a different issue .. my screen timeout won't work at all .. doesn't matter if I select 1 min, 2 min, 5 min.. or even to stay on .. it will only do 15 seconds .. I tried apps to override it .. nothing works .. it gets annoying .. can't even watch a video without it going off after 15 seconds .. I tried a reset .. and that also did not work ..

I am facing same issue on my Samsung J7-6 mobile and every time this problem happened i restart mobile after screen time out working properly, I check all settings but settings are proper. Am using same charging cable for my Moto g3 & J7-6 so same issue affected Moto g3. Finally i changed Charging cable priblem solved on my two devices.

Same but advanced trouble here. My lock screen would not time out at all. Plugged in or not. And lock screen time out is far shorter than the unlocked screen time out.
I set the time screen out to 30 seconds. What I noticed was at 30 seconds the lock screen would dim then blink back to bright. after another 30 seconds it would go off. Set at 15 seconds I would get the same ratio.
After trying many things I did a factory reset. THAT WORKED.
Interesting note: when I got my phone the soft buttons (Touch Key Light) would rapidly blink on off when I touched them. I discovered that the time out for them was not set. none of the radials where ticked. After ticking one it is not possible to untick them all, one will always be chosen. so that is odd. I carried this discovery over to the screen time out issue and wonder if it is the same. After reset the radial for soft buttons where fine.
2 apps I have not reinstalled.
Power toggles (all of a sudden it is out of date and wont work on my device)
DNS66 + Fdroid.

My theory is that Power toggle went bad somewhere. I had it on my lock screen. I did remove it from the lock screen in options. With its ability to set the screen time out it might have been the issue. But have not confirmed it.

After reset I installed each app one by one and tested the lock screen time out. As of yet nothing has recreated the bug

Ok lock screen time out bug is back. I feel it is directly related to Developer mode. I did not have the trouble till I enabled it. After disabling it by clearing
Settings > apps > Application Manager > Settings > Data [Clear]

My screen once again turns off in about 5 seconds in lockscreen.

I have a work around using macro droid. My partial program is as follows:
Screen on trigger
wait 33 seconds <- Important to have enough time to enter password @ reboots
Screen Off - constraint : not locked , Not foreground camera

It is part of a more complicated macro that includes a click sound when the screen is forced off. It has done a significant job helping with my random reboots and other issues.

If I reset my phone again I will leave the debug mode off.

I am going to revisit the Note 4 issue on a new thread with some new observations I have noticed that have not been mentioned.
