Update via Kies Air?

I was reading some people already have a new firmware update out that was not detected through the phones "update software" button under settings..

I just wanted to know if there is a way to scan for updates or something similar via Kies Air.

I believe you'll only be able to download and install firmware updates by connecting your S3 to your PC or laptop.

Seriously? Kies simply doesn't work on my MacBook Air. Does that mean I'll never be able to update my S3? Surely not...
