Help GPSD battery drain

simon238

Lurker
Normally my phone lasts all day at work and I have about 80% battery left. This morning about 10:30am I check my phone and it's already down to 60%.

The process gpsd is draining 75% of my battery currently.

Does anyone know what gpsd is and how I can stop it. I've turned GPS off and it's still draining.

The battery is now down to 33%. I just rebooted the phone and it seems to have stopped draining. But it's going to be rather annoying if this happens daily.

Im having the same problem, can you show me the way to fix it ? I read the link but don't know how to make it right. Thks

The link didn't help at all I don't know if the guy was trying to be helpful in providing it.

It was the standard maps app that was causing mine, even although my GPS was turned off.

I ended maps in recent apps, killed it in the task manager but yet GPSD was still draining my battery. I also cleared my RAM.

Nope didn't work

To stop it I killed the app in application manager in the settings menu (i'm new to android and didn't know this settings menu existed) once it was ended there the % drain started falling.

Basically your looking for an app that uses GPS in that list and stop it running.

The culprit seems to be the tracking system.
I got this issue recently after the software update so looks like Samsung messed up somwehere.

Go into Settings -> security -> enter your details and then slide to unactive.

This will solve the problem. Hopefuly they'll fix it in the next update.

There's no "tracking system" or "enter your details" option in the security menu.

My issue is fixed now anyway, it was google maps running in the backround.

Have you tried to restart the phone ?

I tried to restart and now it's not draining anymore.

I have an idea about this problem. A few days ago I was driving with Sygic navigation and suddenly GPS icon on notification area disappeared but GPS didn't disconnect. Then I turned off / on GPS but nothing changed. I guess this was the reason. When this happened, GPS Deamon (gpsd) stuck and it's state never changed actually. It stayed always on and searching.

Hi
I am also having this problem.

I have read right through this thread about three times but I still don't really understand.

I have gone in to task manager and stopped all the apps that were running and I have gone in to Settings/Location Services and turned off everything.

I have turned the phone off and on again.

gpsd is still at 60%

I'm afraid I have no technical knowledge at all and am new to Android, and indeed smartphones, so I'm really asking if someone can help me in simple language that I will understand.

Many thanks

I've had the same issue, most likely culprit is Samsung remote control. I only installed the Samsung apps recently coinciding with the battery drain. If I don't post again, take it that disabling it fixed it for me

i found a solution to the cursed gpsd hell. . tried everything. . master resets. . rebooting dozens of times. . disabled everthing on my galaxy s4. . rooted and custom roms. . nothing worked. . gpsd refused to stop. . i sat down with a hammer in my hand ready to smash the phone when it hit me. . its not the phone its was the sim card. . yes the sim. . turns out that my galaxy s4 is a gt-19500 model. . its not a LTE/4G phone. . the sim card is a mtn network sim with LTE activated. . what i done is . . went to settings. . connections. . more networks. . mobile networks . .network mode and set it to GSM only. . bloody hell . . it worked. . installed my stock 4.2.2 firmware again. . left nothing disabled or uninstalled for testing. . the phone runs like new. . only downfall is that its running on a slower edge network. . my wife is using the s4 . .she mostly use it for whattsapp and dont do downloads and stuff and dont need high speed. . I'm still convinced that its a network problem because the phone was fine for more than a year and a half with the same sim card thats LTE activated. . will see what happens after a week or so to see if the phone will run on HSDPA network without triggering the bloody gpsd. . i think MTN must have made changes to the network that affected thousands of phones. . my LG G3 is also LTE. . tried te sim from the galaxy s4 and found no problems. . put my sim in the s4 . .and there it was again. . gpsd triggered again . . put it on GSM only in nework settings and yet again the gpsd was gone. . looks like a network problem that affects galaxy s4's

Found a possible reason for S3. a Poor signal causing issues. This youtube vid fixed my high drain. From 80% in 2 hours to 20% in two.
