Galaxy 10.1 compared to Nexus 7

Anyone else bought a Nexus 7 to compliment their Galaxy 10.1?

The Nexus is really nice and Jelly bean is incredible - such a big improvement over honeycomb (and ICS come to that.). I'll still be using my 10.1 tab at home when browsing or watching Netflix as the screen, as well as being bigger, is a lot better. Plus now that Go Launcher HD runs so nicely on the 10.1 it's a lot more useable.

The Nexus is a great little complimentary device, much more convenient for taking out and about.

Given the shocking way Samsung are treating us re: getting ICS on the 10.1 I doubt we'll ever see Jellybean. That's such a shame and JB on a Tab would be a thing of beauty.

I used to have a 10.1 before the wife shattered the screen :(
I found it to be really buggy and HC was a disaster. I now have a Transformer Prime and boy is it smokin fast. Just got my N7 last week and I'm in love. JB is great and the form factor is really nice in the hand (makes my Flyer look like a tank). Still can't believe the price point.
I do like having a couple different sizes and with the docking station for my Prime, it makes it even more versatile.

So funny I found this as I have both on my desk right now. I tend to use the Nexus 7 more but I think it's only because of how new it is. The 10.1 is thinner than the Nexus. And then you have the obvious size difference but I think the upgrade that is coming is going to really improve this. You can get both dirt cheap, Nexus new and 10.1 used. For some reason their resale value is hardly anything.

Is your 10.1 still on Honeycomb? I can't believe how quickly Samsung has abandoned that tablet. Screen and form factor is beautiful but software wise it was terrible when I had it.

I so agree.... I was a very early adopter of the Tab 10.1 I have been regreting that purchase off and on since day one. Sometimes I really was in love with it. Love hate for sure.

I have been waiting and waiting for a software update to make this tab all that it could/should be. I grew tired of waiting and a week or two ago, rooted and ROM'd ICS. The tab just plain rocks now..

But I think I will pick up a 8 gig nexus 7 today. Seems like a nice little device to carry around. I am imagining support its internet connection with my RazrMaxx bluetooth. I think it will be fun!

Truth is I do not NEED either one.

Let me explain something; when I buy a Samsung product support for it ceases. And here is a list of products I've owned: moment, charge, tab 8.9, tab 10.1, noticing the trend? My advice don't buy the same stuff I do

I also was an early adopter of the 10.1 tab. I bought it at Staples with the $100 off coupon. I also purchased the Staples protection. It was great for the first couple of months. After that, the lag and constant battery drains started to drive me crazy. I finally called Staples and have since sent the tab to the repair center. I truly hope they give me a credit. If they do, I’ll either get an Asus 300 or the Nexus 7.

Sadly there's no ROMS that have any kind of 3G/4G data connection working.

That's (kinda) what has me hoping an official JB or at least ICS will be realised eventually. Also it's what stops me bothering with the hassle of rooting, finding a decent ROM and taking the risks involved.

Now that the Go Launcher tab version is up to scratch it's really helped improve my GT-10.1, but I can only imagine how slick JB would be on the tab.

Samsung could gain some major points with owners if they just skipped ICS released JB this summer.

I agree that Sammy pretty much abandoned us on the GT10.1, but replacing the home launcher with Go Laucher HD has me falling in love with it once again.

I bought a Nexus 7 very recently, but I really am underwhelmed. Sure, it's fast, but the screen is just too small to be very useful. I have to rotate the screen to make reading easier and then there's just too much moving scrolling involved. Will be returning this shortly.

If extreme portability is a must, I'll just bring my Droid X. Otherwise, give me the larger screen, which is why I have a used GT 10.1 on its way to me (for ~$20 more than a new 8gb Nexus 7). First thing I'm going to do is root and put a custom ICS ROM on it. I don't need the camera and my tablet doesn't have 3G, so no need to wait for official ICS.

dont use the custom ICS roms, people are now using the UK official ICS update for the wifi only gt 10.1, i use it and it works great. Camera and all. it is not for the 3g version

A 3G version is available too with the UK edition:

[ROM][P7500] P7500XXLQ8 - Firmware of July 2012 - xda-developers

A link to the file is in the first post. Read the thread to see what you need to do to ensure a good flash. This version includes several languages including US and UK.

I did it and I'm running my 3G Tab 10.1 P7500 on ICS and it's great. Very nicely improved over HC and I'm a happy camper!
:)
And the camera works too.

Not exactly apples to apples but I had a Galaxy 7 before I got the 10. I got the 10 specifically because the 7 was too small. No way I'd go back. And no real complaints about the 10.

But it bothers me when people refer to it as an iPad :)

The Tab 10.1 is the only tablet I've ever owned (or used, for that matter).
Heck, I don't even have a tablet style phone.
I bought two 10.1's back in March; one for my wife and one for me.
We both use them every day, often for hours at a time.
Granted we use them only for fun, and don't need any real work related abilities in a tablet or computer.
But no real complaints here. We both enjoy the tabs, everything works fine.
But, I'm still looking forward to the update.
I like my tab a LOT the way it is now.
Can only imagine how much more I'll like with ICS running on it.

I played with an iPad when they were new, but didn't go for it as I don't like Apple software restrictions and limitations. I had an iPhone 3G for a short while, but dumped it and went with Android once FroYo came out. I've owned 3 tablets so far, Asus TF101 (too big and heavy), Acer (poor design and "cheap"), and the Samsung Tab P7500 which I've used for a year now. The Tab is slim, light, and works well. The 3G model is great for on the go use as it always has a connection and I share my 6gig data plan with it and my phone. I have it in a gel case to protect it and add grip, plus a simple folding case to protect it during travel.
Can only imagine how much more I'll like with ICS running on it.

It says you need to change languages, but I found it asked to set my language upon initial setup and defaulted to English UK. I like that it's a "clean" version without any carrier bloatware, settings, or bookmarks.
:)

Rocking the AOSP JB Rom on my GTAB 10.1 and running stock JB on my Nexus 7.

With out a douibt the GTAB is the better device. Running JB its near perfect with ZERO lag and fluid to perfection. GOOGLE NOW is awesome. So awesome in fact I am looking into a root and room for my RazrMaxx.

Almost 2 years old a GTAB running JB is still top of the line. Samsung needs to update to JB ASAP.

They haven't abandoned it at all. It's being updated with ICS. Most European countries have it now and North America should be next. Don't want to wait? Flash the UK update, it works perfectly.

The Samsung hate parade is getting ridiculous. Just because something isn't done on YOUR schedule and on YOUR demand doesn't make it crap or abandoned.

You do realize that your carrier is responsible for your update, not Samsung? They are the ones to complain to.

I have a tab 10.1 that's still on 3.2 (it's so slow compared to my S3) I'm planning on rooting and and flashing that AOSP JB rom on it tonight because I can't wait any longer on the official ICS update.

When the Nexus 7 is available in Belgium I'll go and get it. 7 inch looks nice to work with on the train.

I tought long and hard about getting the Nexus 7 (7 in. DOES make a lot of sense), but then I got ICS 4.0.4 for my old TAB10.1 (GT-P7500D) yesterday: now I'm sure I'll wait for next year's hex-core Nexus 14.7 (I wish!) and then gladly dump my ancient laptop, thank you very much!
