Root Best step by step

I updated to the OTA of ICS and after having it for awhile I want to factory reset. But before I do I want to back up everything so I was going to root my phone, then use Titanium Back up. I've NEVER rooted before and I was wondering if there was any tutorials around to help me. And will rooting factory reset my phone on it's own?
