Help Smart Actions (Location) FAIL

dave562

Lurker
I am trying to setup a Smart Action that will automatically enable WiFi when I'm at home. Seems simple enough? I think I'm partially ******ed, or the phone is. My bet is the phone, but you guys tell me.

I setup the action. I choose a Trigger based on Location. It tells me that I need to enable Motorola Location Services for it to work. I accept that. It takes me to Locations / "Places Important To You" and lists "Home"

When I check Home, it takes me to a setup screen of sorts where it displays the Location Name "Home" and Location Details "My address" (The GPS is working fine. It has me zeroed in perfectly).

I click Done and it takes me back to Locations / "Places Important To You" with "Home" listed and no check mark next to it. I click the check mark and it takes me back in a circle.

There is no way to Save the trigger. DONE never highlights because the check mark never appears next to Home. Clicking on Home and/or the check box just goes back to the setup screen.

Is this a QA fail? Did Motorola / Verizon even bother to test this feature before they pushed out the code into production?

Location based smart actions use wifi, not gps. So you have to leave your wifi on all the time, which defeats the purpose of trying to set up a smart action to turn it on.

And as because of that Smart Actions doesn't let you turn wifi on/off based on location (since out wouldn't work anyways).

Have you tried it lately? I was able to add my home address as a location and turn wifi on and data off when I get home. Works great, actually. I don't remember being able to do that a month or so ago.

Ultimately, it would be nice to be able to set actions for any instance when I'm NOT at home.

Are you on ICS? I am still on GB, and I am not able to set it to turn on WiFi based on my location. The WiFi "action" is not selectable, it is greyed out.

dave562, when adding a location, select the "+" sign in the corner, then select Search. Enter your home address and select Search, then select Attach. When you go back, the location you just entered should be checked. Just select Save and your location trigger will be there.

Hope this helps.

It was not always working for me. However, it is much better now. Setting it to turn WiFi on when I get home has been working for the past week.

You do have to have Location Services set so that it knows where you are without using WiFi.

I have the following checked:
- Google location services
- Standalone GPS services
- VZW location services
- Location & Google search
